Renault Unveils Symbioz, A Spacious Hybrid SUV For Large Families

Renault has unveiled a new addition to its SUV lineup, the Symbioz, which is designed to cater to large families with its three-row seating and petrol-hybrid powertrain. This latest model finds its place between the compact Captur and the larger Austral SUV in Renault's range, positioning it as a competitor to the popular Nissan Qashqai.

The Symbioz not only shares its platform with the upcoming new Duster, which is bound for the Indian market but also carries design cues akin to the international-spec Captur. It is powered by a combination of a 1.6-litre petrol engine and two electric motors, delivering a total output of 145hp.

Design and Practicality

At 4,413mm in length, 1,797mm in width, and 1,575mm in height, the Symbioz is designed to offer ample space. Its design aligns closely with the Captur, especially at the front, featuring a grill pattern that distinguishes it from its sibling.

The designers have infused the SUV with unique side panels and a distinctive rear end, which includes sculpted lights that create a 3D 'ice cube’ effect. Depending on the variant, the Symbioz rides on either 18-inch or 19-inch wheels.

Interior Highlights

The interior of the Symbioz mirrors that of the Captur, with a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system based on Renault's Google-powered OpenR Link system. A standout feature is the sliding second row of seats which can move 160mm backwards, offering up to 221mm of knee room.

This flexibility also allows for expanding the boot capacity from 492 litres to an impressive 624 litres. When the 60:40-split rear seats are folded, the space increases to 1,582 litres. The top-end model benefits from a Solarbay sunroof, featuring electrochromic glass that tints automatically, eliminating the need for a traditional blind.

Powertrain and Performance

The Symbioz will be launched with the E-Tech Full Hybrid 145 system, comprising a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a multimodal automatic gearbox, two electric motors, and a 1.2kWh battery. The system's total output is 147hp, promising a blend of efficiency and performance.

DriveSpark Thinks

Looking ahead, Renault's strategy for the Indian market includes the launch of the all-new Duster and additional models starting from 2025. Currently, Renault's Indian portfolio includes the Kwid, Triber, and the Kiger. There is also speculation about a sporty variant of the Kiger being introduced.

As Renault continues to expand its global and Indian lineup, the Symbioz SUV represents the brand's commitment to offering practical, family-oriented vehicles that do not compromise on efficiency or design. With its hybrid powertrain and flexible interior, the Symbioz is set to be a compelling option for those in need of a spacious and environmentally friendly SUV.
