Renault-Nissan Aims For Electric Breakthrough With Duster EV In India

The Renault-Nissan alliance is actively exploring the launch of a mid-size electric vehicle (EV) for the Indian market, potentially based on the Duster, as the demand for electric cars in India continues to rise.

With an eye on competing with upcoming EV models like the Hyundai Creta EV, the partnership is reconsidering its strategy by shifting focus towards a mid-size electric SUV, moving away from its initial plan of introducing an entry-level EV.

This new direction indicates that the Duster EV could be the alliance's inaugural fully electric offering in India. The vehicle is expected to be grounded in the electrified version of the CMF-B platform, which is also set to underpin its Nissan counterpart.

Both models are anticipated to make their domestic debut by the end of 2025, utilizing a heavily localized version of the CMF-B platform designed to support electric powertrain configurations.

Market Positioning and Development

Reports suggest that the Renault-Nissan alliance aims to price this mid-size electric SUV between Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh, positioning it to compete directly with the likes of Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti Suzuki eVX. While unconfirmed, there is speculation that this model could serve as a global offering, with India potentially acting as a production hub.

The project's development phase has already commenced, with the alliance seeking partnerships with local battery component suppliers to maintain competitive pricing. The CMF-B EV platform, currently under development, is expected to support a range of electric vehicles globally.

DriveSpark Thinks

If successful, the introduction of the electric Duster in India could mark a significant step towards sustainable mobility in the country. The shift towards electric vehicles aligns with the global push for reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. With an impressive range expected, the Duster EV could provide a practical and eco-friendly option for Indian consumers looking to make the switch to electric vehicles.

Renault's strategic plans to release both the electric Duster and the new generation Duster ICE demonstrate their commitment to catering to different consumer preferences and staying competitive in the evolving automotive market. By offering a range of options, Renault aims to appeal to a broader audience and solidify its position in the Indian automotive industry.
