Iconic Renault 17 Reborn As Electric Restomod By Designer Ora Ïto

Renault has engaged in various collaborations with contemporary designers since 2021, producing innovative concepts that reimagine its rich heritage. The latest project, a restomod show car based on the Renault 17 sports coupé, was developed with French designer Ora Ïto. This unique model, named R17 electric restomod x Ora Ïto, was unveiled on 4 September at Maison5 in Paris and will be displayed at the Paris Motor Show from 14 to 20 October.

Ora Ïto, a prominent figure in contemporary design, collaborated with Renault's Design team to create this restomod. He aimed to simplify complex aspects while maintaining the iconic features of the original Renault 17. "With Sandeep (Bhambra) and Gilles (Vidal), we worked on a theme that was retro-futuristic, almost cinematic. I wanted to drape Renault 17 in a second skin," said Ora Ïto.

Since 2021, Renault has launched several creative projects that reinterpret its iconic models. These initiatives highlight the brand's ability to blend heritage with modern design and innovation. The collaboration with Ora Ïto marks the fourth such project in four years, following partnerships with designers like Mathieu Lehanneur and Pierre Gonalons.

The R17 electric restomod x Ora Ïto is not intended for mass production but serves as a testament to Renault’s commitment to innovation. The car retains the original Renault 17's monocoque structure while incorporating modern materials and technologies. It features an all-electric 270 bhp powertrain and a carbon fibre chassis, keeping the weight down to just 1.4 tonnes.

The original Renault 17, launched in 1971, was known for its avant-garde design and sporty appeal. It featured clean lines, front-wheel drive with a longitudinal engine, and various safety features. Over 92,000 units were produced between 1971 and 1979. The new restomod version maintains these characteristics while adding contemporary elements.

The restomod version of R17 includes redesigned seats inspired by interior design trends and new upholstery materials like heathered satin Merino wool and lightweight wool bouclé. The dashboard and centre console have also been updated to match modern standards of comfort and style.

A Retro-Futuristic Vision

The R17 electric restomod x Ora Ïto showcases a blend of past and present through its design. The headlamps are now four rectangular modules with rounded corners, while the rear lights form a single strip. The body is widened by 17 cm for improved roadholding, giving it an elegant yet spectacular look.

Inside the car, the most distinctive features of the original Renault 17 have been preserved but given a futuristic twist. A central screen displays the current Renault graphic environment alongside four small geometric screens inspired by the original dials.

Showcasing at Prestigious Events

This unique prototype will be showcased at Maison5 in Paris until 11 September before being presented at the Chantilly Arts & Elegant Richard Mille competition from 12 to 15 September. It will then be exhibited on the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show from 14 to 20 October.

"Creating a new artistic take on R17 threw open a huge field of exploration," said Sandeep Bhambra, Chief Designer of Concept Cars at Renault. "The creative dialogue between Ora Ïto and our Design team maintains the body lines and spirit of the original R17 while giving it a minimalist, ultra-contemporary look."

Renault continues to innovate by blending its rich heritage with modern design through collaborations with talented designers like Ora Ïto. This approach not only honours its past but also paves the way for future innovations in automotive design.
