2025 Ram 1500 Hurricane High Output Engine Earns Spot On Wards 10 Best List

The 3.0-liter Hurricane High Output (H/O) Straight-Six Turbo engine, tested in the 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten, has been awarded the 2024 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems award. This marks the eighth consecutive year a Stellantis propulsion system has made this prestigious list and the second time a 3.0-liter Hurricane twin turbo engine has been recognized by Wards editors.

In the 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten, the Hurricane High Output engine produces 540 horsepower and 521 lb.-ft. of torque. It is paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, which optimizes smooth shift changes for fuel economy, performance, and drivability.

Ram 1500 Engine Wins Top Award

Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems at Stellantis, stated, "We engineered our Hurricane twin turbo engines to be powerful, efficient, robust and versatile, delivering performance that enhances the driving experience both on- and off-road, and while towing." The engine exemplifies Stellantis' ability to meet various truck customer needs by offering power, performance, capability, and class-leading NHV in one package.

The foundation of the Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6 engine is a deep-skirt cast-aluminum block with a structural aluminum alloy oil pan. As the strongest Ram engine ever, it uses cross-bolted steel main bearing caps to secure the strong rotating assembly, which includes a forged steel crankshaft and forged steel connecting rods.

Stellantis propulsion system engineers incorporated innovative technologies to deliver reduced emissions and achieve big-engine power. These include two low-inertia high-flow turbochargers optimized for each engine that feed three cylinders each for rapid throttle response. Additionally, plasma transfer wire arc coating in the cylinder bores provides an ultra-thin low-friction wear surface.

The Hurricane family offers two engine options: the 3.0-liter Hurricane I-6 Standard Output and High Output engines. These are the most powerful six-cylinder engines in the light-duty segment, providing enhanced fuel economy and more horsepower and torque than other naturally aspirated V-8 and boosted six-cylinder engines.

Environmental Goals

Stellantis aims to become a carbon net zero corporation by 2038 as part of its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. This plan focuses on delivering innovative, clean, safe, and affordable mobility solutions globally. The company is committed to achieving this goal with single-digit percentage compensation of remaining emissions.

The block is deck-plate honed during manufacturing to optimize cylinder bore shape for improved fuel efficiency. An engine-mounted water-to-air charge cooler with a dedicated cooling circuit further enhances performance.

Recognition from Industry Experts

Bob Gritzinger, Wards editor-in-chief said: "The Hurricane High-Output Straight-Six Turbo packs a powerful punch from launch to well past legal speed while also delivering promised fuel economy that represents an improvement over the HEMI V-8 it replaces." He added that this engine should sway even the most dedicated V-8 buyers into considering a six-cylinder option.

The 3.0-liter Hurricane engines are produced at Stellantis’ Saltillo Engine Plant in Mexico. Powertrain flexibility includes internal combustion hybrid and BEV options in global markets to meet customer needs as part of Stellantis’ strategic plan.

Stellantis N.V., known for its iconic brands like Jeep®, Dodge, Alfa Romeo among others, continues to lead in providing clean mobility solutions. The company's Dare Forward 2030 plan aims to create added value for all stakeholders while achieving ambitious environmental targets.

This recognition underscores Stellantis' commitment to innovation in propulsion systems while maintaining high standards of performance and efficiency across its vehicle lineup.
