Protean Electric Unveils New IWM Technology Products For Enhanced EV Performance
Protean Electric, a leader in developing in-wheel motors (IWM), has introduced new products based on its Gen 5 ProteanDrive modular architecture. These innovations were revealed at the Cenex Expo 2024, featuring the compact and lightweight ProteanMotor Pm18 - 800V, which offers 110kW and 1500Nm of torque. Additionally, the 800V SiC TwinverterTM, a 500kW inverter configured as dual 250kw inverters with a peak efficiency of 98.5%, was also unveiled.
Stephen Lambert, Chief Technology Officer of Protean Electric, highlighted the significance of these advancements. He stated, "In-wheel motors are transforming the future of electric vehicles by offering superior efficiency, performance, and design flexibility and today we demonstrate that we are at the forefront of this innovation. Our IWM experience and the adaptability of our Gen5 modular platform, allows us to create a compact and lightweight offering, the Pm-18 800V, alongside our industry-leading 800V SiC TwinverterTM. By delivering these products ready for manufacturing at scale, and focusing on rigorous testing and validation, we are paving the way for the next generation of electric vehicles."
The newly introduced products include both the 400V Pm18 and ProteanInverter. These additions enhance Protean’s product lineup by incorporating advanced technologies such as 800Vdc systems. The company plans to reveal even higher performance IWM designs later this year.
The development of these products is part of Project Olympus under InnovateUK and Advanced Propulsion Centre’s (APC) ARMD2 programme. This initiative aims to accelerate IWM adoption by OEM customers, improving electric vehicle range, packaging, driving experience, and more.
The unveiling follows closely after the launch of Protean's Gen 5 Pd18 IWM. This demonstrates the flexibility of their Gen5 platform in meeting various vehicle application needs through established technology collaborations with OEMs.
Protean will display some of these new products at the UK Government Pavilion during Cenex Expo 2024 at UTAC Millbrook on September 4th and 5th.
