Project Midnight Achieves Victory In US Debut At Velocity Invitational With Travis Pastrana's Family Huckster

The Velocity Invitational at Sonoma Raceway saw the American debut of Subaru Motorsports USA's "Project Midnight," the fastest WRX ever. This vehicle clinched first place in both the Global Time Attack and Hill Climb events. Initially unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, Project Midnight achieved the quickest Shootout time for an internal combustion engine vehicle, narrowly missing the overall Shootout title with a second-place finish.

In the Velocity Hill Climb, driver Scott Speed faced off against renowned competitors like Romain Grosjean in a Ford GT MKIV and Tony Kanaan in a McLaren Senna. Project Midnight triumphed over the Ford by just under half a second. During the Global Time Attack, Speed completed the 2.52-mile Road Course in 1:29.856, outpacing rivals such as James Kirkham’s Mercedes AMG GT3 "Raw Spec" and Cable Rosenberg’s Dodge Viper with 1300 wheel-horsepower.

Scott Speed expressed his satisfaction after breaking into the 1:29s, stating, "The track was awesome this morning, and we executed super well. A successful Velocity Invitational for us." His performance highlighted Project Midnight's capabilities on challenging courses.

Alongside Project Midnight, Travis Pastrana captivated audiences with high-speed Gymkhana runs in his Subaru Family Huckster. This custom 862-horsepower 1983 Subaru GL wagon has become a fan favourite at various events. Pastrana even took some daring attendees for rides and shared memorable moments with fellow drivers Tony Kanaan and JR Hildebrand.

Pastrana remarked on his experience with Kanaan, saying, "I didn’t know that taking Tony Kanaan for a drive in the Huckster was even an option for my bucket list, but it’s really high on the list of awesome things that I’ve had the opportunity to experience." Following Sonoma Raceway, Pastrana is headed to Michigan for the Lake Superior Performance Rally.
