To safeguard your car from flood damage, avoid driving through standing water. Instead, seek alternative routes. If you must drive through water, keep the car in first gear and maintain high revs to prevent water from entering the exhaust. Assess road conditions before proceeding and choose the highest part of the road to reduce the risk of getting stuck.
Precautions During Rainstorms
When parking during a rainstorm or flood, find higher ground to minimise water entry into your vehicle. Ensure all windows are closed properly and consider unplugging the car battery if flooding is suspected. If your car stalls in water, either restart it quickly or avoid doing so altogether to prevent hydrolock.
If your vehicle has been submerged in a flood, allow the internals to dry completely before attempting to start it. Ensure that brakes are entirely dry and free of water on the brake discs. Open all doors and place the car in direct sunlight to dry out any water that has entered the cabin.

Use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to remove any puddles inside the car. Replace all fluids, including engine oil, brake oil, and transmission fluid. Swap out the air filter to prevent moisture from affecting combustion.
