Go-Faster Pre-Production Porsche Taycan Blitzes The Green Hell - Showing Tesla How It's Done

The Nurburgring has long been Porsche's domain. So it comes as no surprise that the Zuffenhausen outfit has reclaimed the electric sedan lap record from Tesla's 1,000bhp Model S Plaid.

The record-breaking lap saw the firm's development driver Lars Kern blitz the green hell in what Porsche calls a pre-production version of the top-spec Taycan facelift due out in March. This pre-production Taycan seems to be the long-rumoured 1,000bhp tri-motor variant.

The actual onboard video is only due to arrive in March along with the updated version of the electric four-door, four-seat, super sedan, however, that hasn't stopped Porsche from revealing the time the Taycan did on the green hell - 7:07.55.

That time is 26 seconds faster than the current most unhinged version of the Taycan, the Turbo S did on the ring a few years back, which just shows you how hard Porsche is going at it. The new time is also over 17 seconds more than the 7:25.31 Tesla did with the Model S Plaid a little while back.

The pre-production Taycan did have a few changes made to it - a roll cage and racing bucket seats - basically to ensure that the pre-production EV was a bit safer and easier to use on the track.

However, it is the changes made to the powertrain, which Porsche is keeping close to its chest, that have really made all the difference. Reports suggest that the version of the Taycan that blitzed the ring is the long-rumoured three-motor, 1000bhp monster that is expected to bear the Taycan Turbo GT badge.

But what makes this version of the upcoming Taycan even more frightening, especially for Porsche's rivals keeping a gimlet eye on the brand's EV progress is the repeatability of the performance.

Speaking about the new record, Kevin Giek, Head of the Taycan model line said, "Twenty-six seconds is half an eternity in motorsport. Lars' lap time of 7:07.55 minutes on the Nordschleife is sensational, putting the Taycan in the same league as electric hypercars. And the impressive thing about it is that over several laps, Lars clocked almost exactly the same time."

Thoughts About The Porsche Taycan's New Electric Nurburgring Record

The fact that the upcoming top-spec Porsche Taycan clocked a low 7-minute time around the 20.8 km course in Germany's Eifel region has left us all a bit awestruck.

The fact that this updated Taycan was nearly 1.3 kilometres further ahead of the previous record-holding Taycan Turbo S, makes us wonder just how mad the rumoured all-electric successor to the 918 hypercar will be.
