Porsche 718 Series Orders Stopped: Electric Future Awaits

Porsche India has ceased taking orders for the current 718 series, with the next-generation electric models expected in 2025. The company has removed the 718 lineup from its Indian website, ending the availability of the internal combustion engine versions of the 718 Cayman and Boxster in India. Customers who have already placed orders will still receive their vehicles.

Transition To Electric

The fifth-generation Cayman and Boxster will be exclusively electric. These new electric vehicles (EVs) are scheduled for a 2025 release and will be produced at Porsche's Zuffenhausen plant, where the current combustion-engine models are made.

The EVs will use a custom electric sports car platform designed to replicate the mid-engined feel of their predecessors and may also serve as a base for future Audi and Lamborghini models.

Porsche's mid-engined two-seaters adopted the 718 name during a mid-life update for the current generation. When introduced in January 2016, many enthusiasts were disappointed by the switch to a flat-four engine for most of the lineup, replacing the previous flat-six unit. However, top-tier models like the 718 Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 later received a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine producing 500hp.

Recent Launches

In 2022, Porsche India introduced the 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS at Rs 1.46 crore and Rs 1.49 crore, respectively. These models featured a detuned version of the flat-six engine from the Spyder and GT4, generating 400hp. About five months later, Porsche launched the high-performance 718 Cayman GT4 RS at Rs 2.54 crore.

The Macan and Cayenne SUVs accounted for nearly 63 percent of Porsche India's sales in the first half of this year. Despite this dominance, the 718 models also contributed to Porsche India's total sales of 489 units during this period.

Future Prospects

Porsche India has announced that bookings for the all-electric versions of the 718 will commence sometime in 2025. This move aligns with Porsche's global strategy to transition towards electric mobility while maintaining performance standards.

The upcoming all-electric models aim to preserve driving dynamics similar to their combustion-engine counterparts. This shift represents Porsche's commitment to innovation while respecting its heritage of high-performance sports cars.
