Porsche Celebrates Four Decades Of Growth And Innovation In North America
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) is marking its 40th year as a sales entity in North America. Initially based in Reno, Nevada, PCNA started with just three models in 1984: the 944, 928, and the 911. That year was notable for Porsche, with their cars securing eight of the top nine positions at Le Mans, including a win by the 956B.
In 1998, PCNA moved its headquarters to Hammond Drive in Atlanta, Georgia. This relocation marked a significant step in the brand's expansion. By 2015, One Porsche Drive opened in Atlanta, serving as PCNA’s current headquarters. This facility includes the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta with two driver development tracks and houses Porsche Classic’s U.S. headquarters.
PCNA’s promotion of the Porsche brand has grown significantly since its inception. The model lineup has expanded from three models in 1984 to six today: the 718, 911, Taycan, Panamera, Macan, and Cayenne. Currently, there are over 200 independently owned and operated Porsche Centers in the U.S., along with three studios and seven satellite stores contributing to sales of over 75,000 cars in 2023.
Porsche's motorsport legacy remains strong. The brand continues to excel in national series like the Porsche Carrera Cup North America and international endurance racing with models such as the 963 and the electric 99X leading Formula E races. The road-going 911 Dakar pays homage to its pioneering victory in the Paris-Dakar rally of 1984.
Timo Resch, President and CEO of PCNA, reflected on this milestone: "This anniversary is a great chance to revisit PCNA’s presence in America in the mid-eighties – making us realize just how far we’ve come in the intervening four decades." He added that it all began in North America in 1950 when importer Max Hoffman placed the first order for Porsches in the U.S., setting long-term plans that led to today's success.
Visitor Engagement
The One Porsche Drive campus offers an immersive experience for enthusiasts and employees alike. Since opening a second Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles in 2016, these centers have hosted nearly a million visitors combined. These facilities provide unique opportunities for fans to engage with the brand firsthand.
PCNA's journey from a modest start with three models to becoming a major player with six distinct lines highlights its growth over four decades. The company's commitment to innovation and excellence continues to drive its success both on and off the track.
The celebration of PCNA’s history underscores its achievements and sets a foundation for future milestones. As Timo Resch noted, this anniversary is not just about looking back but also appreciating how far they have come since those early days.
