Porsche Unveils New 99X Electric GEN3 Evo For Upcoming Formula E Season

Porsche has unveiled its latest Formula E vehicle, the Porsche 99X Electric, set to compete in the upcoming two seasons. This all-electric racer adheres to the GEN3 Evo regulations and showcases enhanced in-house developments. The car was introduced online on 24 October, featuring Bruno Correia, a Formula E safety car driver. Key innovations include front-wheel power capability, improved tire grip, and a redesigned front wing.

World Champion Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa will continue as drivers for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team. Meanwhile, Jake Dennis and new Porsche works driver Nico Müller will drive for Andretti Formula E's customer cars. The GEN3 version of the Porsche 99X Electric has already secured consecutive drivers’ world championships with Dennis in 2022/2023 and Wehrlein in 2023/2024.

The GEN3 Evo introduces several technical advancements for all participating teams. Front-wheel drive can now be activated during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode. This temporary all-wheel drive allows the Porsche 99X Electric to accelerate to 62 mph in about two seconds. Efficiently engaging this feature is crucial for performance and benefits future Porsche road cars.

Higher performance tires from Hankook will enable faster speeds this season. Each car is limited to two sets of tires per race weekend (three for double headers), suitable for both dry and wet conditions. The modified front wing enhances stability, allowing it to better withstand contact.

The Porsche 99X Electric sports new colours: Purple Sky Metallic and Shade Green Metallic, inspired by the Taycan Turbo GT. These shades replace the traditional black, white, and red combination, symbolising technology transfer from motorsport to production vehicles.

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and Andretti Formula E will participate in pre-season testing in Valencia from November 4 to 7. Alongside Wehrlein and da Costa, female drivers Gabriela Jílková from Czechia and Marta García from Spain will test the works Porsches.

Insights from Key Figures

Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, stated: "We build future sports cars, so we also want our appearance to be progressive. The young and innovative Formula E is an excellent platform for promoting our electric production sports cars." Florian Modlinger highlighted that implementing temporary all-wheel drive was a major development task.

Porsche’s commitment to Formula E underscores its dedication to electrification and sustainability. Insights gained here are valuable for developing electric series-production sports cars. The company’s Weissach facility developed the innovative electric racing car concept while maintaining net carbon neutrality.

Porsche's Racing Legacy

Porsche enters its sixth Formula E season in 2024/2025 with both works-run TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and Andretti Formula E competing with the Porsche 99X Electric. This involvement highlights Porsche's leadership among traditional automakers in electrification technology.

Pascal Wehrlein expressed pride in having number one on his car: "The new Porsche 99X Electric is a very cool car. I love the colors so much that I designed my helmet the same way." António Félix da Costa shared optimism about their performance this season despite no major regulation changes.

Technical Specifications

The Porsche 99X Electric boasts impressive specifications: normal operation power at 300 kW (402 hp) with rear power transmission; Attack Mode boosts power to 350 kW (469 hp) with all-wheel drive capability; acceleration from 0–62 mph takes approximately two seconds; energy recovery reaches up to 600 kW through brake energy recuperation.
