Pope Francis Receives Unique Electric Popemobile From Mercedes-Benz Ahead Of 2025 Jubilee
Mercedes-Benz has crafted a unique electric vehicle for Pope Francis, marking a significant milestone. This new Popemobile, based on the electric G-Class, will be ready for the 2025 Jubilee. The event is expected to draw millions to Rome. Mercedes-Benz has been providing vehicles to the Vatican for nearly a century, with the Popemobile tradition spanning 45 years.
The latest Popemobile is entirely electric, aligning with Pope Francis's call for sustainability in "Laudato Si." The vehicle was developed in collaboration with the Vatican to meet specific requirements. It features an adapted electric drivetrain for slow public appearances. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, expressed gratitude to Pope Francis and highlighted the company's commitment to electromobility and decarbonization.
The new G 580 model incorporates EQ technology and four electric motors near each wheel. This design ensures smooth operation during slow journeys at public events. Inside, a height-adjustable single seat replaces the rear bench, allowing flexibility for addressing audiences. Additional seats are positioned on either side of this main seat.
To maintain its classic appearance, the vehicle is painted in pearl white. The roof was removed at the B-pillar and replaced with a hardtop for weather protection. The left rear door was custom-built from a single piece and seamlessly integrated into the bodywork.
Mercedes-Benz's relationship with the Vatican began in 1930 when they supplied a Nürburg 460 Pullman Sedan to Pope Pius XI. Over decades, various models have served as Popemobiles, including modified G-Class vehicles since the 1980s. Some retired Popemobiles are displayed in both Vatican City and Stuttgart's Mercedes-Benz Museum.
Britta Seeger of Mercedes-Benz expressed pride in fulfilling Pope Francis's wish for an electric Popemobile. She emphasized that this collaboration symbolizes sustainable change. Gorden Wagener noted that combining sustainability with elegant design is an honour.
A Collaborative Effort
The project involved teams from Graz, Sindelfingen, and Rome working together over a year. Specialists from Graz adapted the drivetrain while Sindelfingen experts crafted the bodywork and interior using traditional methods. The Rome team managed the overall project coordination.
Pope Francis invited team members from these locations to a private audience after receiving his new vehicle outside St Peter's Basilica. This gesture acknowledged their dedication and craftsmanship in creating this special Popemobile.
