'Driven To Win': A Century Of Motorsport History At Petersen Museum

The Petersen Automotive Museum has unveiled its latest exhibit, "Driven to Win: The Automobile in Competition," in the Charles Nearburg Family Gallery. This display spans over a century of motorsport history, showcasing various competitive disciplines and the technologies that have driven race cars to victory.

Visitors can view legendary vehicles such as the 1946 Kurtis-Miller Ross Page Special and the 1968 AAR Eagle 68 driven by Denny Hulme. The exhibit also features the 2018 McLaren MCL33, the 1966 Lola T70 MKII Spyder, and the 1993 AAR Toyota Eagle MKIII, which won 21 out of 27 IMSA races. Additionally, the 1913 Mercer Type 35-J Raceabout, one of America's earliest sports cars, is on display.

Another highlight is the 1957 Teverbaugh & Kirkland Bonneville Special, notable for being the first land speed racer equipped with a parachute. The exhibit also includes the 1957 Chevrolet 150 Utility Sedan "Black Widow" by SEDCO and Buddy Baker's 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. Baker made history by becoming the first driver to reach 200 mph on a closed course in this car during the late '60s and early '70s.

The collection also features the 1972 Alpine A110 1800 Group IV, which competed in the inaugural World Rally Championship. Another significant vehicle is the 2010 John Force Racing Ford Mustang, driven by John Force to his fifteenth NHRA Nitro Funny Car Championship. These cars represent pivotal moments in racing history and technological advancements in motorsports.

"Motorsports is a significant part of automotive history, and this display represents the ever-evolving journey of racing," said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. "We hope our guests enjoy a look at how auto racing has evolved over the last century."
