Oxa Unveils Autonomous Ford E-Transit Van And Minibus For Enhanced Logistics And Passenger Services
Oxa has announced that its autonomous Ford E-Transit vans and minibuses are now operational on roads in the UK and US. These vehicles, powered by Oxa Driver software, represent a major step in advancing self-driving technology. The Ford E-Transit, a leading electric van in Europe, now offers an economical platform for delivering goods and transporting passengers globally.
The integration of Oxa's Reference Autonomy Designs (RADs) into the Ford E-Transits marks a significant milestone. These blueprints facilitate the swift incorporation of autonomy features, including sensors and drive-by-wire systems. RADs are developed by Oxa and then utilised by vehicle manufacturers to mass-produce autonomous vehicles with flexible distribution models.
Gavin Jackson, CEO of Oxa, stated, "Making the Ford E-Transit available for autonomous operations is the next step on our journey to deliver safe, scalable, and sustainable autonomous solutions." This development is crucial for reshaping passenger transport and logistics. The vehicles are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing fleets for various applications.
The Ford E-Transits can be configured as vans for logistics or minibuses with up to 10 seats for passenger services. The compact hardware ensures no loss of space inside the vehicle. Equipped with standard sensors like cameras, lidar, and radar, these vehicles offer full 360-degree perception and can operate autonomously at speeds up to 35mph in mixed traffic conditions.
To ensure safe deployment, Oxa employs a combination of controlled environments, real-world driving tests, and virtual simulations using Spatial AI technology. This approach allows for accelerated training tailored to customer needs. Manual controls remain intact for flexible use in non-autonomous modes.
The Oxa Driver software provides a smooth ride with low energy consumption, enabling longer operation times. Both the van and minibus versions of the Ford E-Transit are now available for integration into commercial fleets. This flexibility is key to scaling commercial deployments of autonomous vehicles.
Oxa's Vision for Universal Autonomy
Oxa aims to deploy its software across more than a dozen vehicle types in various countries by the end of 2024. This ambition highlights their commitment to universal autonomy across different industries. Their proven track record in innovation positions them at the forefront of transforming transportation and logistics.
Oxa continues to lead in autonomous vehicle technology by developing scalable solutions that meet industry demands. Their focus on safety and sustainability ensures they remain pivotal in shaping future transportation landscapes worldwide.
