Porsche Commemorates Norbert Singer's 85th Birthday And His Impact On Racing Success

Norbert Singer, a renowned racing engineer, is celebrated for his significant contributions to Porsche's success in motorsport. From 1970 to 2004, he was instrumental in all of Porsche's overall victories at Le Mans. As he turns 85 on November 16, 2024, his legacy in the racing world remains unmatched. Born on November 16, 1939, in Eger (now Cheb) in the Sudetenland region of Czechia, Singer pursued mechanical engineering with a focus on aerospace and automotive fields in Munich. His passion for motorsport was evident early on as he followed races like the Nürburgring and Monaco Grand Prix during his student days. This passion led him to join Porsche in March 1970.

Singer's career at Porsche began with a pivotal role in their first overall victory at Le Mans in 1970. He worked on the gearbox cooling system of the Porsche 917 short-tail, which won the race that year. His innovative solutions helped reduce wind resistance by replacing an external oil cooler with a simpler design.

Throughout his career, Singer was involved in developing numerous iconic racing cars. These included models such as the 911 Carrera RSR and Turbo S Le Mans GT. He also contributed to the development of the groundbreaking 956 Group C car and its successor, the 962. These models achieved remarkable success from 1982 to 1986.

The introduction of an aluminum monocoque in the 956 allowed it to achieve ground effect through a special underbody design. "The faster the cars went, the more they literally stuck to the asphalt," Singer recalls. The 956 and its successor won seven overall victories at Le Mans and multiple world championships during their prime years.

After retiring from active duty in December 2004, Singer continued to contribute to Porsche by sharing his expertise as a contemporary witness at the Porsche Museum. He participated in projects like preparing a book on the history of the 956/962 and assisting with racing car restorations.
