Boosting Auto Sector: Nitin Gadkari Announces For Vehicle Scrapping
Auto manufacturers are expected to provide discounts ranging from 1.5% to 3.5% for customers who scrap their old vehicles and purchase new ones, promoting the Circular Economy. Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport & Highways, announced that several commercial and passenger vehicle makers will offer these discounts when buyers present a valid Certificate of Deposit.
Gadkari stated, "I am pleased to report that, in response to my recommendation, several commercial and passenger vehicle manufacturers have agreed to offer discounts for the purchase of new vehicles against the scrapping of older vehicles with a valid Certificate of Deposit. This initiative will significantly advance our Circular Economy efforts, ensuring that cleaner, safer, and more efficient vehicles are on our roads."
Discounts on New Vehicles
The Times of India reported that auto majors are likely to offer these discounts as an incentive for scrapping old vehicles. This move is seen as a significant step towards encouraging the adoption of newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles.
Vinod Aggarwal, President of SIAM, previously mentioned the need for additional incentives from the government to make the vehicle scrappage policy more effective. He said, "We are expecting that the government could do something more on the incentives for the scrapping of vehicles because the scrappage policy is already in place but we have not seen much impact of that."

Aggarwal added, "And so therefore, to give further boost to the scrapping of old polluting vehicles, I think something needs to be done." The current initiative by auto manufacturers aligns with this sentiment and aims to enhance the effectiveness of the existing scrappage policy.
