Nissan Sunderland Welcomes Lee Watson As New Production Director To Lead Sustainable Initiatives
Nissan Sunderland is not only known for its exceptional vehicles but also for nurturing talented individuals. Lee Watson, the new Production Director, exemplifies this. Born near the plant, Lee has spent his entire life in the region. He recalls, "Like many people, I can remember when Nissan first came to Sunderland. One of my earliest memories is of my dad taking my uncle for an interview before the plant was even built. He got the job and only retired a few years ago after 30 years of service."
Lee's educational journey began at Farringdon Comprehensive and continued at Sunderland College. In 1999, he embarked on his career with Nissan in the manufacturing team at Unit shop, initially building engines. Two years later, he transitioned to Trim and Chassis, working on Line One with the Primera model. Over time, Lee advanced through various roles, contributing to projects like the all-electric Nissan LEAF and the record-setting Nissan Qashqai.

In his new position as Production Director, Lee will oversee a production team exceeding 3,000 members. He expressed his pride by stating, "I’m incredibly proud to be taking over as Production Director. Both my grandads were shipbuilders, so it’s great to be carrying on the manufacturing tradition." Despite technological advancements in car production today, Lee believes that teamwork and craftsmanship remain as robust as ever.
The plant's leadership team includes 13 members who began their careers at Nissan and progressed internally. Lee remarked, "It’s proof that at Nissan if you work hard, learn and put the team first there are opportunities to progress." This culture of growth underscores Nissan's commitment to developing talent from within.
Excitement surrounds Nissan Sunderland as it prepares for the production of new Juke and Qashqai models in 2024. Additionally, the plant is advancing its EV36Zero project. This initiative integrates electric vehicle and battery production with renewable energy sources aiming for zero emissions in both driving and manufacturing processes.
Lee highlighted Sunderland's pivotal role in Nissan's sustainability efforts: "Sunderland is at the heart of Nissan's drive to a sustainable future. I’m looking forward to the challenges and exciting change that will bring." His enthusiasm reflects a commitment to innovation while maintaining traditional values in manufacturing.
The journey from local roots to leading a major automotive plant illustrates how dedication can lead to significant achievements within one's community.
