Nissan India's Exports Surge In May 2024 Amidst Domestic Sales Dip
Multiple automakers manufacture their vehicles in India and cater to both the domestic market and international exports. However, some have struggled to gain traction locally, experiencing a consistent decline in sales. Despite this, the export of their India-made vehicles has shown consistent growth. Here are the details.
With June underway, carmakers have started sharing their sales performance for May 2024. Among them is Nissan, which announced it dispatched 6,204 units in the domestic market last month.

For Nissan India, May 2024 was a strong sales month. In April 2024, the Japanese carmaker dispatched only 3,043 units, marking a growth of around 104 per cent month-on-month.Compared to May 2023, when the automaker sold 4,631 units, the growth stands at 34 per cent.
Out of the total units dispatched in May 2024, Nissan sold 2,211 units in the domestic market. In May 2023, the carmaker sold 2,618 units, indicating a decline of 15.5 per cent year-on-year. When compared with overall sales, domestic sales have witnessed a decline.

The growth primarily comes from exports. Nissan India exported a total of 3,993 units in May 2023. In April 2023, the carmaker exported only 639 units. This represents a 99 per cent month-on-month growth. In May 2023, Nissan exported 2,013 units, making it almost double year-on-year.
With this performance, Nissan has crossed a significant milestone by producing and dispatching a total of 1.4 lakh units for both domestic and export markets. The Japanese carmaker exports its India-made vehicles to 15 countries. Major markets include Bangladesh, Uganda, Brunei, Middle Eastern countries, Saudi Arabia and Oman.
While focusing on exports, Nissan is also working on expanding its network within India to reach more customers. Recently, it inaugurated a new showroom in Salem, Tamil Nadu. In total, it has 272 showrooms across the country. This number is expected to grow further in the coming fiscal year.
Nissan recently introduced the XTRA special edition of its Magnite compact SUV, priced at Rs 9.84 lakh (ex-showroom). It is positioned above the XV Black Edition. Nissan is known for offering affordable CVT automatic variants in respective segments. Most of its products are priced under Rs 10 lakh.

Nissan as a brand has not been able to gather much traction in India due to tough competition from established players offering sometimes superior products. This has resulted in lower sales figures for Nissan domestically.

While Nissan's products have failed to gain traction in the Indian market, it is performing well internationally. This might encourage the company to bring more products to the Indian market in the near future.
