Nissan Engineering Leader David Moss Receives Prestigious Autocar Mundy Award
A long-standing and highly respected engineer at Nissan has been honoured with one of the automotive industry's most prestigious awards. David Moss, Senior Vice President for Research and Development across Nissan’s Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania region, received the Mundy Award for Engineering from Autocar. This accolade recognises his significant contributions to the development of the Nissan Qashqai.
David Moss joined Nissan in 1989 as a graduate engineer and has since risen through various roles in Europe and Japan. His work has spanned body design, interior and HVAC engineering, and corporate planning. He has been instrumental in all three generations of the Qashqai, from concept stages to production.
The Mundy Award acknowledges Moss's involvement with the British-built Nissan Qashqai, which has become one of the UK’s most popular vehicles since its launch in 2007. Over four million units have been produced, making it a regular feature among the UK's best-selling cars. Mark Tisshaw, Autocar editor, remarked: "Many congratulations to David Moss on receiving the Mundy Award for Engineering at the 2024 Autocar Awards."
Moss expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award: "This is a huge honour, not to mention a big surprise, and I’d like to express my thanks to Autocar for recognising my contribution in this way." He emphasised that the award also recognises the efforts of his talented colleagues who have worked on developing great cars over the years.
Under Moss's leadership, Nissan is also focusing on transitioning to electric vehicles. The UK government has awarded £15m towards a £30m collaborative project led by Nissan under its EV36Zero project. This initiative aims to enhance technical expertise and R&D capabilities at Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield.
This funding is part of broader plans to establish a world-first EV manufacturing ecosystem in the UK. The project includes investments up to £3bn for renewable energy infrastructure, battery gigafactories, and future electric versions of Qashqai, Juke, and LEAF models.
A Storied Career
Moss's career with Nissan has been described as stellar by Autocar. His leadership qualities and depth of expertise have been pivotal in numerous projects beyond just the Qashqai. "This award is given with Qashqai very much in mind but David’s work includes many other projects," said Tisshaw.
Reflecting on his journey with Nissan, Moss said: "The Qashqai is such an important car for Nissan and its success is down to the supreme talents of thousands of people across the UK, Spain, Belgium and Germany – the designers, engineers and of course the team building it in Sunderland."
The Mundy Award is named after Harry Mundy, Autocar’s first technical editor and a notable figure in British engineering history. This recognition adds another feather to Moss's cap as he continues to lead innovative projects at Nissan.
