NISMO Celebrates 40 Years Of Motorsport Excellence And Innovation In Yokohama
Nissan is commemorating the 40th anniversary of NISMO, its motorsports and performance division. Founded on 17th September 1984 as Nissan Motorsport International Co. Limited, NISMO has been pivotal in enhancing Nissan's reputation for high-performance vehicles. Initially based in Omori, Tokyo, NISMO has been instrumental in creating some of Nissan’s most thrilling cars and motorsport ventures.
Visitors to the Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama can explore a range of NISMO models. The display includes rare road models like the NISMO 270R and the esteemed NISMO 400R. Track legends such as the Nissan R390 GT1, which finished third at the 1998 Le Mans, and the Daytona-winning Nissan R91CP are also featured. The exhibition will be open until 15th October 2024.
Takao Katagiri, head of Nissan's global motorsports unit and president of NMC, expressed gratitude to supporters since 1984. He stated, "We would like to thank everyone who has supported NISMO since 1984 and we look forward to delivering speed, confidence and exhilaration for decades to come." Katagiri emphasized their commitment to integrating racetrack insights into customer products.
The current lineup of domestic models from NISMO in Japan is also showcased. This includes the newly launched Ariya NISMO, AURA NISMO, and FAIRLADY Z NISMO. These vehicles highlight the brand's dedication to merging track performance with everyday driving experiences.
NISMO Festival
Fans can look forward to the 2024 NISMO Festival on December 1 at Fuji International Speedway in Shizuoka Prefecture. This event celebrates four decades of NISMO's achievements in racing and its evolution into high-performance road cars. It promises a nostalgic journey through the brand’s illustrious history.
Katagiri also shared future goals: "Our aim is to deliver exhilaration for fans at the circuit and embed the learnings from the racetrack into products customers can buy." He highlighted plans for global expansion, aiming to introduce more exciting NISMO models worldwide.
Nissan remains committed to its "Track to road" philosophy, ensuring that innovations from motorsports enhance their consumer vehicles. This approach continues through their Super GT and Formula E racing programs, reinforcing their dedication to performance excellence both on tracks and roads globally.
