Nicky Grist Receives Prestigious Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy For Rally Contributions
World Rally Championship co-driver Nicky Grist has been honoured with the Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy, the highest accolade from Welsh Motoring Writers. The 1993 WRC champion co-driver received the award at his business in Pontrilas, on the Herefordshire/Wales border.
Ebbw Vale-born Grist partnered with triple WRC champion driver Juha Kankunnen in a Toyota Celica GT-Four in 1993, helping navigate the Finn to a fourth title. Later, his partnership with 1995 champion Colin McRae led to further rally victories. By their final win together in 2002, Grist had accumulated 21 WRC wins over a nine-year period.
Grist, who now owns Nicky Grist Motorsports, a competition clothing and equipment supply business, expressed his gratitude: "It’s an unexpected pleasure to be given a ‘home grown’ award, and I’m grateful for the recognition, as well as joining the list of illustrious previous winners of the trophy."
Welsh Motoring Writers chair Simon Harris praised Grist: "Nicky Grist is one of the most successful rally co-drivers Wales has ever produced. His iconic partnerships with Juha Kankunnen and Colin McRae delivered some memorable drives for enthusiasts around the world. He is an extremely worthy recipient of the Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy and deserves his place in motorsport history."
The Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy honours individuals or organisations with significant contributions to motoring or transport. Named after Wales' greatest racing driver, Tom Pryce, who tragically died during the 1977 South African Grand Prix, the award recognises excellence and special relationships with Wales' automotive sector.
