Next-Gen Maruti WagonR Hybrid: Powertrain & Other Details
With the evolution of hybrid technology, even entry-level vehicles like the WagonR might soon feature a full hybrid system. Since its Indian debut in 1999, the Maruti WagonR has been a popular choice. Currently, it runs on a 1.0-litre K-series engine and offers a CNG variant as well.
Next-Gen WagonR Hybrid Powertrain
Recent updates suggest that the next-generation WagonR in Japan could introduce a full hybrid system. If this happens, it would be the first minicar to adopt such technology. The Japanese model is expected to have an Inline 3 DOHC, 0.66-litre hybrid engine.

This setup will produce 54 PS from the ICE engine and an additional 10 PS from the electric motor, with torque outputs of 58 Nm and 29.5 Nm respectively. An electric continuously variable transmission (eCVT) will manage power delivery.
Next-Gen WagonR Hybrid Dimensions
In terms of size, the Japanese full hybrid WagonR will measure 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and stand at 1,650 mm tall. It will have a wheelbase of 2,460 mm and weigh around 850 kg. A notable change for this model is the shift from hinged doors to sliding ones.
Potential Benefits of Hybrid Technology
While reduced emissions are a benefit of hybrid systems, potential buyers are more interested in cost savings with the new WagonR. Despite its higher initial price compared to non-hybrid models, it could offer lower running costs due to better mileage. Although official figures aren't available yet, comparisons can be drawn with the Grand Vitara strong hybrid's fuel efficiency of 27.97 km/l.
The current WagonR delivers up to 25.19 km/l (AGS), while its CNG variant achieves an impressive 33.47 km/kg. If designed for optimal fuel efficiency, the full hybrid version might surpass these figures and exceed 30 km/l.
Pricing Expectations for Full Hybrid WagonR
Typically, full hybrids are pricier than their petrol versions. For instance, while the basic WagonR starts at Rs 5.55 lakh in India, its full hybrid counterpart might seem significantly more expensive. However, reports suggest that its pricing will remain competitive.
In Japan, it's anticipated that the starting price for the full hybrid WagonR will be around 1.3 million yen (approximately Rs 7.22 lakh). Although this is higher than current models, it's reasonable given its advanced features. The top-spec variants could reach up to 1.9 million yen (around Rs 10.55 lakh).
India's Future with Hybrid Systems
Maruti is already exploring affordable hybrid systems for smaller cars in India using a likely 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine configuration for models like WagonR, Swift, Dzire and Fronx. The top-spec ZXI+ AGS variant of India's current WagonR starts at Rs 7.21 lakh; CNG options range between Rs 6.45 lakh and Rs 6.90 lakh.
