Made-In-India Swift To Be Launched In South Africa With CVT Gearbox: Indian Variant Gets AMT Unit

Maruti Suzuki's vehicles have a strong presence not only in India but also globally. South Africa is a crucial market for Maruti, serving as a gateway to other African nations. The company plans to introduce the new Swift model in South Africa soon, with details emerging about this launch.

South Africa and India both use right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles, allowing the Indian Swift model to be exported with minimal modifications. Other African countries like Kenya, Mauritius, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, and Zimbabwe also use RHD vehicles. Maruti Suzuki exports its cars to several RHD markets, including some European countries and Japan.

The majority of Maruti cars available in India are exported to South Africa with similar components. However, the new Swift model for this market may have some minor changes. Specifically, the 4th generation Swift car in South Africa is expected to have a CVT transmission instead of the 5-speed AMT available in India.

CVT gearboxes are known for their smoothness and fuel efficiency. They can maintain peak power and torque longer than conventional gearboxes. Users generally experience a smoother driving feel with CVT compared to AMT gearboxes.

It remains uncertain if there will be any changes in power and torque output with the CVT gearbox. The Indian edition of the 4th generation Swift offers 81.58 PS of power and 111.7 Nm of torque. It provides a mileage of 24.8 km/l with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 25.75 km/l with an AMT gearbox.

Apart from the CVT gearbox, most features of the South African Swift will mirror those offered in India. Exterior features are expected to include a chrome black grille, projector headlamps with boomerang DRLs, dual-tone alloy wheels, and C-shaped taillamps.

The interior will feature a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charging capabilities, rear AC vents, USB ports (Type A and Type C), cruise control, and connectivity through the Suzuki Connect app. The car will closely resemble its Indian counterpart.

Market Response and Economic Impact

Indian-made cars have been receiving positive feedback overseas. People prefer these cars due to their perceived quality and high mileage. This preference contributes to economic growth for India.

Maruti has also launched a CNG variant of the Swift in India, offering an impressive mileage of 32.85 km/kg. This sets a benchmark in its segment but is not exported to Africa. It remains one of the highest mileage cars in India.
