New BIS Safety Standards Introduced For Electric Vehicles In 2024

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced two new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, to enhance the safety of electric vehicles (EVs). These standards aim to ensure that the powertrain, a critical component of EVs, meets stringent safety requirements.

Additionally, these standards place a strong emphasis on the safety and performance of batteries, ensuring they are both powerful and secure. The newly introduced standards target electric vehicles in the L, M, and N categories, covering a wide range of vehicles.

Focus on Battery Safety

This initiative is a significant step toward reinforcing the reliability and safety of electric powertrains and batteries. These components are crucial for defining the efficiency and security of electric vehicles. Recognising the growing popularity of e-rickshaws and e-karts in India, BIS has also launched IS 18294: 2023 specifically tailored for their safety.

The standards for e-rickshaws and e-karts encompass various aspects from construction to functionality. This ensures comprehensive safety measures for both drivers and passengers. With these new additions, BIS now boasts a total of 30 Indian standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems.

Comprehensive Set of Standards

This comprehensive set of standards is crucial in driving India's transition to a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient transportation system. The focus on stringent safety requirements for powertrains and batteries highlights the importance of these components in EVs.

By introducing these new BIS Safety standards, the entity aims to enhance the overall safety and performance of electric vehicles. This move is expected to boost consumer confidence in EVs and support India's efforts towards achieving a greener future.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution oversees BIS. These new standards reflect the government's commitment to promoting safe and reliable electric mobility solutions in India.

As electric vehicles continue to gain popularity in India, ensuring their safety becomes increasingly important. The introduction of these standards marks a significant milestone in the country's journey towards sustainable transportation.

With a focus on both powertrain and battery safety, these standards aim to address key concerns related to EV performance and security. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the growth and adoption of electric vehicles in India.

Overall, the new BIS standards represent a proactive approach to enhancing EV safety. They provide a robust framework for ensuring that electric vehicles meet high safety standards while promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
