Mustang GTD Becomes First American Car To Complete Nürburgring Lap In Under Seven Minutes
The Mustang GTD has achieved a remarkable feat by completing a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:57.685. This makes it only the sixth production sports car to break the seven-minute barrier on this challenging track. The Mustang GTD is now the fifth fastest in its class, according to official records.
Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife is renowned as a benchmark for sports car performance. The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, driven by Dirk Müller from Multimatic Motorsports, is the first American car to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time here. The 815-horsepower vehicle completed the circuit, known as "The Green Hell," with an officially certified time of 6:57:685.
The journey to this achievement is documented in "The Road to the Ring," a 13-minute film available on Ford's website and social media platforms. This documentary highlights the challenges faced by the Mustang GTD team during their quest for a sub-seven-minute lap at Nürburgring.
Jim Farley, Ford President and CEO, expressed pride in this accomplishment, stating, "The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars." He added that while they are proud of this milestone, there is still potential for improvement.
The success of Mustang GTD at Nürburgring is attributed to a dedicated team of engineers and designers who transformed the Mustang GT3 race car into a supercar over two years. The Mustang GTD benefits from advancements made by Ford Performance Motorsports and Multimatic Motorsports through their Mustang GT3 program. These include improvements in aerodynamics and track setup specific to circuits like Nürburgring. However, unlike GT3 racing cars, the Mustang GTD isn't restricted by regulations that limit certain technologies.
This freedom allowed for features like carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, a supercharger, and semi-active suspension. While maintaining its stock status during its record-breaking lap, it included motorsport-derived safety equipment required by Nürburgring standards.
