MAHLE Powertrain's Mike Bunce Honoured With SAE Foundation's Leadership Award
Mike Bunce, MAHLE Powertrain’s Head of Research and Head of Design & Analysis, has been honoured with the SAE Foundation’s Young Industry Leadership Award. This accolade, presented at the SAE Foundation’s Annual Celebration in Detroit, acknowledges individuals with notable career achievements and leadership in promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.
Dr. Bunce is globally recognised for his research on enhancing engine efficiency and enabling the use of low carbon fuels. His work on pre-chamber combustion technology has gained international acclaim as a high-efficiency, low-emissions solution for future fuels. He has led over 50 development programs with industry partners on this topic and manages a technology portfolio that includes advanced combustion, low carbon fuels, fuel cell systems, emissions control, hybrids, and batteries.

In 2022, Dr. Bunce completed his PhD at the University of Nottingham. He is a strong advocate for preparing the next generation of engineers to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry. He has supported undergraduate engineering fairs and mentorship programs to this end.
The SAE Foundation is the charitable arm of SAE International – the Society for Automotive Engineers – which advances mobility knowledge and solutions for humanity's benefit. Now in its 12th year, the award winners are selected by a committee of industry professionals who review nominations across various categories.
