MG Excelor Name Patented | Potential Launch Soon

MG Motor is preparing to expand its range of electric vehicles in India by possibly introducing the MG Excelor EV this year. The company, experiencing a significant increase in EV sales accounting for approximately one-third of its overall sales, has now become the second most popular EV brand in the country. This decision is aligned with MG's plan to sustain its progress in the electric vehicle market.

Trademark Hints at New Launch

Earlier, MG Motor revealed plans for two new launches in 2024, including an updated MG Gloster model. While details about the second launch were not disclosed, the trademarking of the name 'Excelor EV' suggests it could be MG's upcoming electric vehicle. However, it's worth noting that MG has a history of naming its vehicles after British aircraft, and no aircraft called Excelor has been identified.

The status of the 'Excelor EV’ trademark as 'Accepted and Advertised’ indicates a strong possibility that MG might use this name for a new product. Furthermore, an Excelor EV logo has also been trademarked, adding weight to the speculation.

Rebadged Version of an Existing Model?

Considering MG Motor’s current global portfolio lacks a product named Excelor, it's speculated that the Excelor EV might be a rebadged version of an existing MG electric car available in international markets. This speculation is based on MG’s presentation of several global models at the 2023 Auto Expo, including the MG eHS SUV, eMG6 hybrid sedan, Marvel R, and MG eRX5 SUV, suggesting one of these could be launched in India as the Excelor EV.

No specifications or details about the Excelor EV have been disclosed yet, including its body style, dimensions, or whether it will target the mass market or be a luxury import via the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route. MG currently offers the Comet EV in the entry-level segment and the MG ZS EV in the compact electric SUV category. With the addition of a mid-size electric SUV, MG could further solidify its position in the Indian EV market, especially with upcoming competitors like the XUV700 EV and Harrier EV.

DriveSpark Thinks

MG Motor's strategic efforts to strengthen its presence in India's EV sector are evident from its recent partnership with JSW, which acquired a 35% stake in MG Motor India. With electric vehicles as a key focus area for this joint venture, MG's expansion of its EV portfolio, including the potential introduction of the Excelor EV, aligns with its growth objectives in the evolving Indian automotive market.
