MG Cloud EV To Electrify Indian Roads: Tata Nexon & Mahindra XUV400 In Sight

MG Motor India is gearing up to electrify the Indian automobile market with a new vehicle every three to six months starting from the second half of 2024. Among the anticipated launches, the Cloud EV is set to make an early appearance, aiming to carve out its niche within the bustling EV segment.

MG Cloud EV: A Game Changer In The Making

The Cloud EV, which is part of the Wuling brand in Indonesia and known as the Baojun Yunduo in China, will don the MG badge in India. Already spotted on Indian roads, this vehicle is poised to stir the local EV market.

With an expected price tag under Rs 20 lakh, the Cloud EV is set to compete directly with the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 electric SUVs, offering a more wallet-friendly alternative to MG's ZS EV.

The strategic pricing of the Cloud EV hinges on achieving high levels of localisation, including local assembly of battery packs. This approach not only makes the Cloud EV an attractive proposition for buyers but also underscores MG's commitment to the Indian market.

Design & Features That Stand Out

Measuring approximately 4.3 metres in length and sporting a wheelbase of 2,700mm, it offers a unique aesthetic with its minimalistic design, flush door handles, and full-width LED light bars.

The vehicle's interior continues the theme of minimalism, featuring a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, and fully reclining front seats for enhanced comfort.

In international markets, the Cloud EV is available with two battery options - a 37.9kWh and a 50.6kWh, offering ranges of 360km and 460km, respectively. Powered by a front-axle mounted motor delivering 132bhp, it remains to be seen which version will be introduced in India.

Positioning & Potential Impact

The Cloud EV's entry into the Indian market is not just about expanding MG's electric portfolio but also about offering a unique alternative in the EV space. Slightly smaller than traditional MPVs like the Maruti Ertiga and Kia Carens, it is poised to be the only all-electric model in its segment until the launch of the Kia Carens EV in the latter half of 2025.

DriveSpark Thinks

MG's ambition to price the Cloud EV under Rs 20 lakh could make it one of the most intriguing new entries in the Indian automobile market this year, offering a blend of style, functionality, and sustainability that could appeal to a broad range of consumers.
