Mercedes-Maybach Launches Special Edition S-Class For Robbe & Berking's Milestone
Mercedes-Maybach and Robbe & Berking, both renowned for their dedication to craftsmanship and elegance, have collaborated to create a unique S-Class model. This special edition marks the 150th anniversary of the Flensburg silver manufactory. The design draws inspiration from the legendary SPHINX 12mR yacht, built in 1939 and known as the "night-blue beauty" in sailing history.
The SPHINX yacht, a classic wooden vessel, was the first to be restored by Robbe & Berking. This restoration led to the establishment of Robbe & Berking Classics shipyard in 2008. The Mercedes-Maybach S 680 anniversary vehicle mirrors the yacht's colour scheme with a two-tone paint finish: nautical blue metallic on top and MANUFAKTUR patagonia red bright below, separated by a fine pinstripe in MANUFAKTUR opalite white metallic.

The interior of this one-off S-Class features Maybach MANUFAKTUR Exclusive nappa leather in crystal white with diamond quilting. Orion grey decorative stitching contrasts with the white leather in selected areas. The wood walnut trim with light-coloured aluminium strips echoes a ship’s deck. Customised nappa leather cushions in silver grey pearl add further elegance.
The interior also includes electric comfort doors at the rear, MANUFAKTUR door sill trims with red illuminated MAYBACH lettering, and a Burmester® high-end 4D surround sound system. The MBUX high-end rear-seat entertainment system and a cooling compartment with two silver-plated champagne goblets from Robbe & Berking enhance luxury. These goblets have been part of Mercedes-Maybach models since 2002.
The SPHINX yacht belongs to the prestigious "12 Metre R class" (12mR yacht), built between 1907 and 1987. These yachts were premier class vessels for America's Cup races from 1958 to 1987. Despite being called "12 Metre," they are significantly longer due to an international rule agreed upon in 1906 for racing yachts construction.
Restoration of SPHINX Yacht
The SPHINX was constructed in 1939 by Abeking & Rasmussen boatyard for Hamburg's North German Regatta Association (NRV). It was the last of ten such boats launched and later served under various names including "Ostwind" for the German Navy from 1958 to 2004 as a training ship for officer candidates. Oliver Berking purchased it in 2005 with friends and restored it according to original plans.
In its original name SPHINX, this classic wooden yacht was reintroduced to sailing enthusiasts worldwide after restoration. In 2008, Oliver Berking founded Robbe & Berking Classics shipyard in Flensburg’s city harbour to preserve expertise gained during restoration projects. This shipyard has become globally recognised for restoring classic sailing yachts and building replicas of lost classic boats.
