Mercedes-Benz And Chris Kamara Team Up For Vantasy Football To Support Van Drivers' Mental Health

Mercedes-Benz Vans and former Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara have introduced Vantasy Football, a five-a-side tournament aimed at van drivers. This initiative seeks to foster team spirit and enhance mental health among drivers. The launch coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week, highlighting the increasing isolation faced by van drivers due to the rise in home delivery demands.

The Under the Bonnet report from Mercedes-Benz Vans reveals that van drivers spend up to 25 hours weekly alone, often without anyone to converse with. A third of these drivers engage in three or fewer conversations daily, significantly lower than the national average of 27. This isolation has led to nearly 87% of van drivers experiencing loneliness at work.

Vantasy Football Aids Van Drivers' Wellbeing

Additionally, two-thirds (65%) of van drivers report suffering from depression or anxiety, which is four times higher than the national average. The report indicates that loneliness is a regular part of their working day for almost half (47%) of these drivers.

To address these issues, teams can now apply to participate in the Vantasy Football tournament. Scheduled for August at St George’s Park, England’s football training ground, this event is exclusively for van drivers. Chris Kamara, who has battled isolation due to apraxia, will host the event. He emphasised the importance of social interaction and sport in combating loneliness.

"Spending time on your own, not talking to people, these things have a real impact on mental health. I know what isolation does to you," Kamara said. "Sport is such a major part of my life and my recovery. The camaraderie of sport – being part of a team – is such a great way to overcome loneliness."

Drivers' Perspectives on Isolation

Paul Murphy, a driver at Alliance Healthcare UK, shared his experiences: "As a driver, the amount of time you spend on your own can sometimes make you feel like you’re living in your own head with no one else – particularly those who undertake longer routes and only have a few conversations every day."

"Without talking to people, one small problem can fester in your mind over the day. And then before you know it, it’s snowballed into a worry that wouldn’t otherwise pose you any problems," Murphy added.

Increasing Demand for Home Deliveries

The demand for home deliveries has surged since 2012, leading to a 37% increase in van drivers on UK roads. According to the Under the Bonnet report, over half of UK van drivers now spend around 50 hours weekly on the road compared to the national average of 36.4 hours.

This rise in online sales from platforms like TikTok Shop and Vinted has prompted 79% of business leaders to anticipate significant impacts on trading within the next year. Nearly half (49%) expect greater reliance on van drivers for transporting goods and deliveries.

Mercedes-Benz Vans' Commitment

Robert Veit, MD of Mercedes-Benz Vans UK, stated: "The amount of van drivers on the road is increasing, and our Under the Bonnet report found that they are spending more time alone in their van." He added that Vantasy Football aims to connect these drivers through team sports.

"At Mercedes-Benz Vans we’re proud of the work that we’re doing to keep businesses and communities moving – and always being on the side of van drivers through everything the new day throws at them," Veit concluded.

The initiative underscores Mercedes-Benz Vans' commitment to supporting both businesses and individual well-being by addressing mental health challenges faced by van drivers amid growing delivery demands.
