Mercedes-Benz Unveils New Electric Drive Technology For Enhanced Efficiency And Performance

Mercedes-Benz is advancing towards a fully electric future with its new drivetrain technology. The Electric Drive Unit (EDU 2.0) in the upcoming all-electric MMA models showcases a new generation of electric drive units. This system incorporates advanced 800-volt technology and a silicon carbide (SiC) inverter, initially seen in the VISION EQXX, into the compact class.

The EDU 2.0, developed entirely by Mercedes-Benz engineers, features a 200 kW electric drive unit with a permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle. High-performance power electronics are integrated with an SiC inverter for efficient energy use. For 4MATIC models, an 80 kW drive unit is mounted on the front axle, also equipped with an SiC inverter.

Mercedes-Benz Advances Electric Drive Efficiency

The new electric drive system aims for a WLTP range exceeding 750 kilometers (466 miles), as demonstrated in the Concept CLA Class. With battery-to-wheel efficiency of 93% on long trips, it offers impressive real-world ranges. A two-speed gearbox on the main drive at the rear axle enhances efficiency and dynamic driving performance.

Mercedes-Benz introduces an 800-volt electric architecture for the first time, enabling high-power DC charging up to 320 kW. In the Concept CLA Class, a quick 10-minute charge can add up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range.

The premium battery cells have anodes with added silicon oxide to graphite, increasing gravimetric energy density by up to 20% compared to previous batteries. At cell level, volumetric energy density reaches 680 Wh/l. Raw material usage has been optimized for sustainability.

Battery safety is paramount; the housing integrates into the vehicle's structure and crash safety system. All high-voltage components meet stringent Mercedes-Benz safety standards. Comprehensive precautions prevent thermal runaway in this new battery generation.

Hybrid Options: Versatile Powertrains

Shortly after launching all-electric models, Mercedes-Benz will offer hybrid versions with 48-volt technology and an electric motor providing up to 20 kW of drive power. This drivetrain excels in efficiency due to energy recuperation and all-electric urban driving capabilities.

The hybrid features an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT), integrating the electric motor and inverter. The combustion engine is a new FAME four-cylinder petrol engine, launching in the U.S. with a 140 kW output.

Electric Software Hub: Development Epicenter

The Electric Software Hub (ESH), opened in 2022 at Sindelfingen's Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre, plays a crucial role in developing compact electric vehicles. It combines software, hardware, system integration, and testing functions under one roof.

This facility ensures smooth interaction between new hardware and software components throughout vehicle development stages.

Record-Breaking Endurance Test

A close-to-production CLA prototype achieved a record drive covering exactly 3,717 kilometers (2,309 miles) in just 24 hours at Italy's Nardò test track. This feat highlights time efficiency and maturity ahead of market launch.

The interdisciplinary "Project N" team included specialists from series development and data experts who supported this successful test remotely from Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim offices.

Mercedes-Benz continues to lead innovation in both electric and hybrid drivetrains through intelligent modularity within its versatile vehicle architecture while maintaining high safety standards across all models developed under these platforms globally.
