Mercedes-AMG ONE Breaks Own Nürburgring Lap Record With Time Of 6:29.090 Minutes
Mercedes-AMG ONE has set a new benchmark for production vehicles. Maro Engel, the brand ambassador and DTM driver, improved his previous lap time by over five seconds. The hypercar achieved a record time of 6:29.090 minutes on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. This makes it the first road car to break the 6:30-minute barrier, solidifying its position as a leader in the super-sports-car class.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE is equipped with Formula 1™ hybrid drive technology, making it unique among production cars. It features one combustion engine and four electric motors, delivering a total of 1,049 hp (782 kW). The top speed is capped at 218 mph (352 km/h). This technology includes a carbon monocoque and body, active aerodynamics, and a pushrod chassis.
The E PERFORMANCE hybrid drive in the AMG ONE comes directly from Formula 1™, developed with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth. It consists of a turbocharged combustion engine and four electric motors. One motor is integrated into the turbocharger, another on the combustion engine linked to the crankshaft, while two drive the front wheels.
Maro Engel expressed gratitude for being part of this achievement. "Two years ago, conditions were not ideal," he said. "Today we demonstrated the maximum potential of the AMG ONE." He thanked his team from Affalterbach for their trust and support during this record-breaking attempt.
For optimal performance, Maro Engel used the AMG ONE's four-stage Energy Flow Control (EFC) system. This involved strategic energy recuperation during braking phases on specific track sections. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) was also employed to reduce drag and increase speed on fast sections.
The AMG ONE's complex technology offers more than some Formula 1™ cars. It includes fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. Customers can use these features along with MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires developed specifically for this car.
Record-Breaking Performance
On September 23, 2024, Maro Engel set the new record at Nürburgring-Nordschleife under perfect conditions. With temperatures at 59°F (air) and 68°F (asphalt), he completed his third timed lap at 6:56 p.m., achieving this remarkable feat.
The high-revving power unit is enhanced by an advanced turbocharger system. An electric motor drives the turbocharger shaft directly, accelerating it up to 100,000 rpm before exhaust gas flow takes over. This ensures immediate response across all rpm ranges.
Innovative Battery Technology
The lithium-ion battery in AMG ONE mirrors Formula 1™ race cars but with more cells for everyday use. It offers an electric range of 11.2 miles (18.1 kilometers) and charges via an integrated AC charger or through recuperation from braking or engine power.
The battery's direct cooling system maintains optimal temperature for performance and safety. A high-tech coolant circulates around each cell individually, ensuring even heat distribution throughout the battery pack.
Efficient Energy Utilisation
The electric turbocharger also acts as a generator by using surplus exhaust energy to generate electricity stored in high-voltage batteries or fed back into electric motors driving front wheels or crankshaft-linked motor.
This innovative approach allows higher torque at low speeds while maintaining boost pressure when decelerating—ensuring continuous responsiveness without lag time between acceleration demands from drivers' inputs on pedals.
