Mercedes-AMG Launches Its First In-House Developed High Performance SUV 'Born In Affalterbach'
Mercedes-AMG is set to introduce a high-performance SUV, marking a significant milestone as it is the first time in 57 years that the company is developing an SUV entirely in-house. This vehicle, "Born in Affalterbach," will be built on the new AMG.EA electric high-performance platform. Initial test drives for these development vehicles are scheduled for this winter.
High-performance SUVs have been a key part of AMG's offerings for over 25 years. The ML 55 AMG was the brand's pioneering model in this segment, capturing customer interest and driving growth. Today, Mercedes-AMG offers six SUV model lines, including the AMG GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 remains the standout model in their performance SUV range.

This new full-size SUV will be the second vehicle constructed on the all-electric AMG.EA platform. It joins other models developed by Affalterbach's specialists, such as the AMG GT, SL, previous generation GT, and SLS models. This project marks the first time Mercedes-AMG is designing an entire vehicle architecture from scratch.
Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, stated: "SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the 'Born in Affalterbach' SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform."
The new architecture follows a philosophy of "AMG First, EV Second," ensuring that these vehicles excel not only as electric cars but also embody AMG's core qualities of emotion and performance.
