McLaren W1 To Succeed Iconic F1 And P1 Hypercars - Reveal Set For Next Month
McLaren Automotive has announced the unveiling of its latest supercar, the McLaren W1. This new model will be introduced at 08:00 ET/05:00 PT on Sunday, 6 October 2024. The W1 name pays homage to McLaren's World Championship spirit and coincides with the 50th anniversary of McLaren's first Formula 1 Constructors' World Championship win and Emerson Fittipaldi's 1974 World Drivers' Championship victory with McLaren.
The McLaren W1 follows in the footsteps of the renowned McLaren F1 and P1 models. Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive, stated, "The McLaren W1 is defined by real supercar principles and is the ultimate expression of a McLaren supercar. Born of our rich racing history and World Championship mindset, W1 pushes the boundaries of performance and is worthy of the '1’ name. Like its predecessors the F1 and McLaren P1™, W1 defines the rulebook of a real supercar."
McLaren Automotive, established in 2010, is a key part of the McLaren Group. It focuses on producing high-performance, lightweight supercars. The company operates from its headquarters at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, Surrey, England. With over six decades in racing performance, McLaren has created some iconic supercars.
The company's product range includes GTS, Motorsport, Ultimate models, and more. These vehicles are sold in over 40 markets globally. Each car is meticulously assembled by hand at the McLaren Production Centre (MPC), located alongside MTC in Woking.
In 1981, McLaren introduced carbon fibre chassis technology into Formula 1 with the MP4/1 model. This innovation laid the foundation for their supercar DNA. In 1993, they launched the legendary F1 road car built around a carbon fibre chassis. The introduction of the McLaren 12C in 2011 marked their first production car for modern times.
McLaren was also a pioneer in hybrid hypercars with the launch of P1™ in 2013. This vehicle initiated their Ultimate Series lineup, followed by models like Senna and Speedtail hybrid hyper-GT. The Elva model emerged as their lightest road car ever.
Recent Developments and Collaborations
The LT series represents peak track performance among production supercars for McLaren. Originating from the 'Longtail' version of F1 GTR in 1997, it became part of their nomenclature with models like 675LT coupe and Spider introduced in 2015.
In recent years, they unveiled models such as Artura Spider—a high-performance hybrid convertible—and Solus GT—a single-seat track car inspired by virtual gaming concepts. Their latest series-production supercar is named 750S.
Partnerships and Global Presence
McLaren collaborates with leading companies like Ashurst, Bowers & Wilkins, Dynisma among others who excel within their fields globally. These partnerships help push boundaries further across various domains.
The broader McLaren Group encompasses both automotive manufacturing through hand-built lightweight cars raced worldwide including prestigious events like Formula One Championships while maintaining headquarters at iconic MTC facility located within UK’s largest independent companies sector known for technological excellence worldwide since being founded back during Bruce Mclaren’s era back during early sixties era till date today still continuing legacy forward even now into future generations ahead too!
