McLaren Automotive Teams Up With Atlas Copco For Advanced Manufacturing Solutions

McLaren Automotive has announced Atlas Copco as its ‘Official Smart Tooling Supplier’. This collaboration aims to enhance McLaren's manufacturing and engineering operations at the McLaren Production Centre (MPC). The integration of Atlas Copco’s technologies into McLaren’s systems has streamlined production processes.

Atlas Copco has provided over 150 battery-powered, transducerised digital tools, including the ITB and SRB ranges, to McLaren. These tools are 5G capable and connected to Atlas Copco’s Power Focus 8 controller. This setup allows up to 20 tools to be connected, creating a fully integrated production environment.

McLaren, Atlas Copco Forge Smart Tooling Pact

The partnership also includes real-time data insights from Atlas Copco’s Smart Integrated Assembly portfolio. This system uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to identify potential production risks before they occur. Additionally, automation of McLaren’s bodyshell adhesive application processes will be enabled through this collaboration.

Atlas Copco’s joining and vision technologies, such as high precision SCA adhesive dispensing and the 3D laser profiling RTVision quality inspection system, are being utilised by McLaren. These technologies enhance efficiency and accuracy at every stage of assembly.

Matt Walton, Chief Manufacturing Officer at McLaren Automotive, stated: "McLaren is pleased to announce a pivotal partnership with Atlas Copco, marking a significant milestone in our production transformation journey. The collaboration between McLaren and Atlas Copco has proven instrumental in the rapid advancement of our production capabilities."

Sustainable Manufacturing Commitment

James McAllister, General Manager of Atlas Copco Tools and Industrial Assembly Solutions, commented: "As innovative leaders in our respective markets, Atlas Copco and McLaren Automotive are both fully committed to delivering sustainable manufacturing with quality and precision at its core." He added that the new partnership has created a cutting-edge smart factory environment at the MPC.

McLaren Automotive was launched in 2010 and is now the largest part of the McLaren Group. The company is headquartered at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, Surrey, England. It produces ultra-high-performance supercars that are hand-assembled at the MPC.

Innovative Supercar Production

The company’s product portfolio includes GTS, supercar, Motorsport, and Ultimate models sold in over 40 markets worldwide. Notable models include the hybrid hypercar McLaren P1™, introduced in 2013, followed by the McLaren Senna in 2018 and its track-only GTR derivative in 2019.

The latest addition to their lineup is the Artura Spider revealed in early 2024. This model is part of a major uplift for the Artura nameplate. The Artura Spider is also notable for being McLaren's first high-performance hybrid convertible.

Pioneering Technologies

McLaren has a history of pioneering technologies such as introducing carbon fibre chassis technology into Formula 1 with the MP4/1 in 1981. In 1993, it designed the legendary McLaren F1 road car built around a carbon fibre chassis.

The company continues to innovate with models like the Speedtail hybrid hyper-GT introduced in 2019 and the Solus GT announced in 2022. The Solus GT is a single-seat track car initially created for virtual gaming but brought to life as a real vehicle.

Global Partnerships

McLaren partners with world-leading companies like Ashurst, Bowers & Wilkins, Dynisma, Gulf, Monroe, Pirelli, Plan International, Richard Mille and Tumi. These partnerships help push boundaries in their respective fields.

Atlas Copco has been innovating since 1873 by listening to customers' needs and delivering value with future-oriented solutions. Their industrial power tools, assembly systems, and machine vision solutions are key components for customers’ success across various industries.

This collaboration between McLaren Automotive and Atlas Copco represents a significant step forward in enhancing production capabilities through advanced tooling solutions while maintaining a commitment to sustainability and precision.
