Matt Hagan Triumphs With 52nd NHRA Career Victory At Texas Fall Nationals
Matt Hagan, the current NHRA Funny Car World Champion, secured his 52nd career victory at the NHRA Texas Fall Nationals. Driving the Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) Johnson Horsepowered Garage Dodge//SRT Hellcat, Hagan triumphed at the Texas Motorplex. Meanwhile, TSR teammate Tony Stewart faced a first-round exit in the Top Fuel category. Hagan's win marked his second consecutive victory at this event and fifth overall on this track.
Hagan's performance was remarkable as he achieved his fastest elapsed time of the year with a 3.823 during qualifying. This earned him the No. 2 starting position in the 16-car field. The victory in Texas was his third national event win of the 2024 season, following successes in Charlotte and Joliet earlier this year. It also marked his 98th career NHRA final round appearance.
In Sunday's final round, Hagan faced former World Champion Ron Capps under challenging conditions with temperatures reaching 95 degrees and track surfaces nearing 130 degrees. Despite these hurdles, Hagan's crew, led by Dickie Venables, managed to secure a "holeshot" victory over Capps with a reaction time of 0.064 compared to Capps' 0.084. Hagan's time of 3.943 edged out Capps' 3.934, earning him another Texas NHRA "Wally" trophy.
Earlier rounds saw Hagan defeating Bobby Bode, Cruz Pedregon, and Daniel Wilkerson to reach the finals. This win propelled him back into third place in the current NHRA Mission Funny Car points standings with two races left in Las Vegas and Pomona.
Tony Stewart continued his rookie season in Top Fuel racing but was eliminated in the first round by Shawn Reed with a time of 3.817 against Reed's 3.753. Stewart currently holds tenth place in the NHRA Mission Top Fuel points standings as he looks forward to upcoming races.
"This was a very challenging weekend," said Stewart. "We shouldn't have put ourselves in the position of needing to qualify for the event in qualifying session No. 4." He expressed pride in Matt Hagan and his team's performance while focusing on future events.
Upcoming Races and Coverage
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host nitro action starting Friday, Nov. 1, with qualifying rounds scheduled for both Friday and Saturday afternoons. Final eliminations are set for Sunday morning on Nov. 3rd at 11 a.m., with Fox Sports 1 providing television coverage later that day.
In other Top Fuel news from Texas Fall Nationals, Sweden’s Ida Zetterström competed against her JCM Racing teammate Tony Schumacher but lost with a time of 4.082 to Schumacher’s faster run of 3.801.
