Matt Hagan's Pursuit For Fifth Title Continues With Semifinal Finish At NHRA Nationals
Matt Hagan, the reigning NHRA Mission Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion, advanced to the semifinals at the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Driving his Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Hellcat, Hagan continues his pursuit of a fifth world title. He secured two round victories against former World Champion Cruz Pedregon and defending Norwalk race winner Blake Alexander.
Hagan qualified sixth in the 16-car Funny Car lineup and recorded times of 3.914 and 3.900 seconds in his wins, setting a low elapsed time (ET) in the second round. However, in the semifinals against Ron Capps, Hagan's car lost traction off the starting line, allowing Capps to advance to the final round. Despite this loss, Hagan remains third in points, just three points behind second place as he heads into the "Western Swing" of the series.
The next Nitro competition for Hagan and Stewart is set for July 19-21 at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways. Qualifying rounds are scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. PDT, with additional sessions on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. PDT. Final eliminations will begin on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. PDT, with FOX Network televising Sunday's eliminations at 4 p.m. EDT.
"We’ve advanced to the semifinals three races in a row and have some momentum going into the ‘Western Swing’," said Hagan. "It will be nice to get a little break. And it was great to have a group from Dodge at the race this week." He added that they are working hard to get back into the winner’s circle.
Both Hagan and his TSR teammate Tony Stewart expressed their sentiments about missing Funny Car legend John Force after his crash at Richmond left him hospitalised. "It was a tough weekend without John Force at the track," said Hagan. "He’s improving and that is great news for everyone." Stewart echoed these feelings, stating, "It felt very weird this weekend not having John with us."
Stewart continued to show strong performance in his tenth NHRA Top Fuel national event by qualifying fifth in Norwalk's 16-car field. Despite another quick reaction time off the starting line, he narrowly lost in the first round to Jasmine Salinas' faster run of 3.750 seconds compared to his own 3.769 seconds.
