Maruti Suzuki Set To Unveil New CNG Vehicle: May Sport Dual Tank System
Maruti Suzuki has teased the imminent launch of a new CNG vehicle, looking at potential enhancements to its S-CNG platform. Maruti Suzuki, known for having the largest fleet of CNG cars in India, currently offers a factory-fitted S-CNG platform that prioritizes performance, safety, convenience, mileage, and durability.
Potential Introduction Of Dual CNG Tanks
One common issue with CNG cars is the limited boot space due to the 55-60 litre CNG tank. Last year, Tata introduced a dual-tank setup of 30 litres each to address this problem, first seen in the Altroz. This setup is now available in Tiago, Tigor, and Punch models.

Teasers suggest Maruti Suzuki might adopt a similar twin-tank setup for its S-CNG platform. Maruti already uses dual tanks in its Super Carry light commercial vehicle, with each tank holding 35 litres. The new twin tanks for passenger vehicles might have a capacity of 25-30 litres each, with the spare tyre relocated below the boot.
Maruti's Expansive S-CNG Fleet
Maruti's S-CNG lineup includes Alto K10, WagonR, Dzire, Celerio, Eeco, S-Presso, Fronx, Ertiga, Brezza, and Grand Vitara. The new-generation Swift will also feature a CNG option soon. This expanded offering ensures Maruti remains competitive in the growing CNG market.
Potential New Features For S-CNG
With Tata Motors and Hyundai expanding their CNG fleets, Maruti Suzuki might introduce new features to its S-CNG cars. The existing S-CNG platform already offers numerous benefits not available with third-party CNG kits. These include a specialized injection system for optimal air-fuel ratio during combustion, ensuring consistent performance and higher fuel efficiency.
Maruti also modifies the suspension and braking systems to maintain optimal performance across varied terrains. Safety is enhanced with mechanisms to prevent short circuits, and the entire CNG setup is leak-proof and corrosion-resistant. A micro switch prevents the car from starting during refuelling, and the cars are tested for crashworthiness and durability.
Maruti CNG cars come with an auto switch feature, allowing users to switch between CNG and petrol easily. Additional features include a CNG fuel level indicator and an NGV receptacle for faster and safer refuelling. Maruti offers a comprehensive warranty on its CNG cars, extendable up to five years.
DriveSpark Thinks
The CNG car segment has been getting some momentum in India as the running cost of these cars are far less compared to their respective petrol-powered counterparts. Moreover, with the launch of newer models, we expect the CNG segment to get a decent boost in momentum.
