Maruti Suzuki Strong Hybrid Technology: Innovating To The Future

By DriveSpark Bureau

Maruti Suzuki, India's biggest carmaker has always been bringing innovation to the Indian car market. These innovations have seen India get into cars at an ever-increasing pace, which started way back in 1983 with the arrival of the Maruti 800.

In the 40+ years since, Maruti Suzuki has introduced several key innovations aimed at easing the lives of the people inside the cabin. These include the HEARTECT safety platform, efficient K Series engines, Auto Gear Shift transmission, and environmentally friendly S-CNG and Smart Hybrid technologies.

Maruti Suzuki Strong Hybrid Technology

Now, in response to growing environmental concerns and the global shift towards a lower emissions future, Maruti Suzuki recently unveiled its Intelligent Electric Hybrid powertrains for the recently launched Grand Vitara and Invicto. The Intelligent Electric Hybrid system, known more commonly as "Strong Hybrid" combines the range and flexibility of the internal combustion engine with the benefits of electric vehicles, such as instant torque, lesser emissions, and silent operation, offering a bridge to a zero emissions driving future.

Exploring Maruti Suzuki's Strong Hybrid Vehicles - How It Works & The Benefits

Maruti Suzuki has been offering smart hybrid powertrains with many of its cars for quite a while now. However, the new Maruti Suzuki Strong Hybrid vehicles, take the electrification game down a different route and are unlike anything we've seen from the nation's largest carmaker.

Whereas the electric motor in the smart hybrid systems only helped with initial acceleration and under load as well as a starter for the engine, the Strong Hybrid powertrains from Maruti Suzuki ensure that the electric motor and IC engine work together to deliver the best possible response in terms of both performance and efficiency.

Maruti Suzuki's Strong Hybrid Technology is offered with the two flagship vehicles from the nation's largest carmaker - the Grand Vitara SUV and the Invicto luxury MPV. Both vehicles use naturally aspirated petrol engines and an electric motor that draws power from a lithium-ion and Ni-MH battery pack respectively, adapting to changing driving conditions.

Both the Grand Vitara and the Invicto feature multiple driving modes that help optimise performance while ensuring that harmful tailpipe emissions are kept to a minimum. These include the lesser emissions Electric Drive mode; the hybrid drive mode that makes use of both the electric motor and the IC engine and the Engine Drive mode that only uses the petrol engine to drive the wheels.

In EV mode, the Strong Hybrid Technology allows for a silent driving experience that minimises noise pollution by utilising only the electric motor, which in turn ensures that the emissions from the tailpipe are non-existent.

When accelerating or under demanding conditions, the Strong Hybrid Technology on the Invicto and the Grand Vitara seamlessly shifts into hybrid mode engaging both the motor and engine, allowing you to get the best of both worlds in terms of EV and ICE power and efficiency.

Engine Drive Mode is engaged when the battery levels get depleted. In this mode, the engine alone drives the wheels while also charging up the lithium-ion/ NI-MH battery pack at the same time.

The Strong Hybrid Technology also uses regenerative braking to charge up the battery pack, meaning that whenever you tap the brakes of either the Grand Vitara or the Invicto from Maruti Suzuki, you are charging up the lithium-ion/ Ni-MH battery pack.

This self-charging capability of Maruti Suzuki's Strong Hybrid Technology means that most of the time you find yourself behind the wheel of the Invicto or the Grand Vitara you are driving in EV mode which is always engaged when you're driving smoothly and the battery has the charge to help you glide along silently. You also get brilliant performance and fuel economy while never having to worry about electric range like you would in the EVs of the present day.

The Strong Hybrid Technology on the Grand Vitara is so efficient that the Maruti Suzuki SUV can cover over 1,200 kilometres in one full tank. This means that a trip down the coast from Mumbai to Jaipur is something that can be done without ever having to worry about stopping for fuel or running around in panic in search of an EV charger.

Final Thoughts About Maruti Suzuki's Strong Hybrid Vehicles - The Bridge To An Electric Future

Maruti Suzuki's Strong Hybrid Technology is offered with the nation's largest carmaker's flagship offerings - the advanced Grand Vitara SUV and the indulgently opulent Invicto luxury MPV.

The Strong Hybrid Technology on the Invicto and Grand Vitara make use of the dual powertrains on offer to extract the maximum performance while at the same time offering unbelievable levels of fuel efficiency while also reducing how harmful your daily drive is to the environment.

Using, its Strong Hybrid vehicles, Maruti Suzuki has created a bridge between our internal combustion past and the all-electric future we are all hoping for.
