Maruti Suzuki Jimny Joins Kerala Police Fleet: A New Era
The Kerala police department has recently incorporated the Maruti Suzuki Jimny into its fleet, selecting the top-of-the-line Alpha variant. This variant, finished in Granite Grey, succeeds the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, marking a modern update to the vehicles used by police and armed forces.
This move highlights the Jimny's adaptability and robustness, making it a suitable choice for rigorous law enforcement duties. The Jimny, with its ladder-frame chassis, is one of the lightest in its class, tipping the scales at about 1,200 kg.

Despite its promising start, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny faced challenges in the Indian market. Initially, the fourth-generation Jimny, available globally in a three-door version, caught the eye of many. However, Maruti Suzuki opted for a five-door version for India, aiming to cater to the market's needs.
Yet, this decision didn't quite hit the mark as anticipated. One of the major setbacks was the vehicle's high price point, which was further exacerbated by its price-to-performance ratio.
The Jimny, powered by a modest 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, found itself outclassed by competitors like the Mahindra Thar, which offered a more powerful 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a diesel engine, producing significantly more power.
Experts have critiqued Maruti Suzuki's strategy, suggesting that the Jimny was incorrectly marketed as a lifestyle vehicle rather than a family SUV, which could have broadened its appeal.
This, coupled with its underpowered engine compared to rivals, particularly the lack of a diesel option, placed the Jimny at a disadvantage. As a result, despite its initial popularity, the Jimny struggled to maintain its momentum in the competitive Indian automobile market.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is currently available between ₹12.74 lakh and ₹14.95 lakh (ex-showroom), offering both a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission.
Despite the hurdles it faces, the Jimny remains a noteworthy addition to Maruti Suzuki's lineup, celebrated for its lightweight design and off-road capabilities. It continues to symbolize Maruti Suzuki's ambition to capture a niche segment within the Indian automotive landscape.
