Maruti Suzuki Maintains Leadership In India's Passenger Vehicle Exports For FY2025: Volkswagen Secures Third Position

In the first half of FY2025, Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate as India's leading passenger vehicle exporter for the fourth year in a row. Despite a 3% decline in domestic market wholesales to 844,614 units, the company saw a 12% year-on-year (YoY) increase in exports, reaching 147,063 units.

This accounted for 39% of India's total passenger vehicle exports of 376,679 units—a YoY rise of 12%. The growth was largely driven by increased SUV and MPV exports, which made up half of Maruti Suzuki's total exports during this period.

Volkswagen India experienced a significant boost in its export numbers, climbing by 74% to reach 35,079 units. This surge propelled Volkswagen to the third position among exporters, largely due to strong demand for its Virtus sedan and Taigun SUV models.

Meanwhile, Nissan Motor India also saw an impressive increase of 64%, exporting 33,059 units. The Sunny sedan and Magnite SUV were key contributors to Nissan's success.

Hyundai and Honda's Export Performance

Hyundai Motor India maintained its second-place ranking despite a slight dip in exports by 1%, totalling 84,900 units. In contrast, Honda Cars India achieved remarkable growth with a 229% increase in exports to 31,775 units.

This performance elevated Honda to the fifth-largest exporter position, with significant contributions from the made-in-India WR-V (Elevate SUV).

Kia India faced challenges as it fell to sixth place with a substantial decrease in exports by 62%, amounting to just 14,828 units. The decline was mainly attributed to reduced shipments of its Sonet and Seltos models.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor retained its seventh position with a notable rise in exports by 49%, reaching 12,288 units. The Rumion MPV and Urban Cruiser Hyryder were instrumental in Toyota's export growth.

Citroen and Tata Motors' Export Trends

Citroen's export numbers more than doubled to reach 2,259 units during this period. Tata Motors also saw a slight increase in its export figures, totalling 1,512 units. These trends indicate positive momentum within India's passenger vehicle industry on the international stage.

The data suggests that SUVs and MPVs are becoming increasingly important in global markets. Indian-made vehicles are gaining competitiveness internationally as well.

With total exports already up by 12% YoY in the first half of FY2025, the industry is poised for potentially surpassing its previous best export year recorded in FY2017.
