Maruti Suzuki Fronx ADAS Variant Spotted Testing: Leap Towards Enhanced Safety

Maruti Suzuki's Fronx is a popular sub-4m crossover in India, based on the Baleno. It has achieved impressive sales and even has a Toyota counterpart called Taisor. Recently, an ADAS variant of the Fronx was spotted under testing, raising questions about whether it will be launched in India or is just an export model.

Automotive enthusiast Kartikey Bansal captured a spy shot of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx ADAS variant being tested in India. The vehicle had red temporary registration plates from Haryana State, typical for Maruti Suzuki test mules. Some camouflage was also present on this unit.

Fronx ADAS Variant Spied

The spy shot reveals the Fronx ADAS variant's radar-based sensor system. This V-shaped quadrilateral module monitors the road ahead and detects obstacles like cars, motorcycles, humans, and cyclists. It works with a camera to enhance safety. The upcoming eVX model will also feature ADAS.

Currently, Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue are the only sub-4m offerings with ADAS in India. If launched, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx ADAS variant would be the third to offer this advanced safety feature.

In India, Maruti Suzuki does not offer ADAS in any of its vehicles, including those sourced from Toyota like the flagship Invicto. Testing ADAS on a smaller and more affordable vehicle like the Fronx highlights Maruti Suzuki's commitment to improving vehicular safety.

Export Model Speculations

However, there is speculation that this Fronx ADAS variant might be an export-spec model rather than one intended for India. Maruti Suzuki has started exporting the Fronx to Japan, where safety features like AEB are mandatory. The test mule spotted in India looks identical to the Japan-spec Fronx.

The most notable safety feature currently offered by Maruti Suzuki is six airbags across its portfolio. The company has faced criticism for selling cars with low safety ratings. Introducing ADAS in the Fronx could significantly improve its reputation regarding vehicular safety in India.

Additional Features and Powertrains

Apart from the ADAS module, the recently spied Fronx test mule also features front parking sensors, which are not available in India yet. The powertrains for the Fronx in India include a 1.2L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo petrol unit. There are speculations that a facelifted version of the Fronx might get a 1.2L strong hybrid engine as well.

The launch of the Fronx ADAS variant in India remains unconfirmed at this point. Whether it will be introduced or remain an export-only model is yet to be seen.

This development could mark a significant step forward for Maruti Suzuki if they decide to introduce ADAS technology in their Indian lineup, enhancing overall vehicle safety standards.
