New Consumer Survey Reveals Majority Of Americans Are Still Open To Buying Electric Vehicles Despite Changing EV Market
Woodcliff Lake, NJ, June 5, 2024—On World Environment Day, a survey commissioned by MINI USA highlights that charging infrastructure, rather than range, is the primary factor influencing electric vehicle (EV) consideration among American consumers. Despite a slowdown in EV demand from early 2024, the survey indicates that interest and compatibility with EVs remain high.
The survey, conducted annually in the spring by Engine’s CARAVAN®, reveals that consumer opinions on EVs have largely remained unchanged over the past year. Approximately 58% of respondents reported no change in their views, while 28% had a positive shift and 14% a negative one. Notably, 60% of consumers are open to purchasing an EV, with Gen Z (72%) and Millennials (70%) showing the highest interest.
As the automotive industry works to meet the EPA’s new emissions standards—requiring 56% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2032—60% of Americans believe this target is achievable. Mike Peyton, Vice President of MINI of the Americas, noted high customer interest in electrification ahead of new models like the MINI Countryman SE, set to launch in September.
Charging Infrastructure Concerns
One significant barrier to near-term EV adoption is the current state of charging infrastructure. While half of Gen Z respondents feel confident in the existing network, only 12% of Boomers share this sentiment. Fast charging is particularly important for younger generations, with 80% of Gen Z expecting charge times of an hour or less.
Driving Habits and Range
The survey also found that Americans' daily driving habits have remained consistent over the past five years. About 71% of consumers drive less than 75 miles per day, compared to 74% in 2019. With most mainstream EVs offering over 200 miles per charge, range is less of a concern for daily commutes and routine travel.
Cost Concerns and Family Considerations
Overall vehicle cost remains a significant factor deterring EV purchases, cited by 39% of respondents. However, families are more open to EVs if efficiency savings offset pricing concerns. About 68% of respondents with children are likely to buy an EV under these conditions, compared to 47% overall. Gen Z drivers are similarly inclined (67%), while only 41% of Boomers share this view.
Survey Methodology
The General Population survey was conducted among a sample of 1,013 adults aged 18 and older on behalf of MINI USA. The online omnibus study took place from April 19-21, 2024. Portions of this survey were previously conducted in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
