Mahindra XEV 9e Vs BYD Atto 3: Design, Powertrain, Features & More
Mahindra recently launched the new XEV 9e electric SUV. Looking at the specs, its closest competitor turns out to be the BYD Atto 3. These SUVs not only present a leap toward futuristic mobility with their cutting-edge technology but also offer a blend of style and efficiency that appeals to modern consumers.
Design
The Mahindra XEV 9e boasts a progressive exterior with its sharp LED headlights and a dynamic body silhouette highlighted by a coupe-like roofline and prominent LED tail lamps. Its design is complemented by large alloy wheels that enhance its aerodynamic efficiency.

In contrast, the BYD Atto 3 opts for a sporty yet more traditional SUV appearance, featuring a closed grille adorned with chrome, LED headlights, roof rails for added functionality, and turbine-inspired alloy wheels, all culminating in a modern LED light bar at the rear.
Interior & Tech
Moving inside, the Mahindra XEV 9e offers a luxurious interior equipped with three 12.3-inch screens powered by Mahindra's Adrenox software, setting a high bar for in-cabin technology. The interior boasts a range of premium features including a panoramic sunroof with ambient lighting, climate control, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory function, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), ensuring both comfort and safety.
On the other hand, the BYD Atto 3 prioritizes comfort and functionality with its 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen and a compact 5-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional features such as a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and ample boot space, which can be expanded to 1,338 liters, underline the Atto 3's practicality.
Performance
When it comes to performance, the Mahindra XEV 9e is available with two battery options: a 59kWh and a 79kWh pack, capable of delivering a top range of over 600 km. It supports fast charging, allowing its battery to be recharged from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes. The electric motor generates between 231 and 286 horsepower, albeit power is only sent to the rear wheels.
The BYD Atto 3, equipped with BYD's Blade Battery technology, offers two battery variants as well: a 49.92kWh and a 60.48kWh pack, with ranges of 468 km and 521 km, respectively. It supports 80kW fast charging, achieving a 0-80% charge in 50 minutes, and its motor produces 201hp and 310Nm of torque.
Safety
Safety is paramount in both models. The Mahindra XEV 9e features brake-by-wire technology for precise braking, a semi-active suspension system for a smoother ride, and multiple drive modes for enhanced stability across different terrains. It is built on the durable INGLO platform, ensuring robust crash protection. Although details on airbags and ADAS are yet to be disclosed, they are expected to be competitive.
The BYD Atto 3 includes seven airbags, ADAS functions such as lane-keep assist and automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, electronic stability control, and hill descent control. Its Blade Battery is also designed to be collision- and fire-resistant, adding an extra layer of safety.
Pricing
Pricing varies between the two models, with the Mahindra XEV 9e starting from Rs 21.90 lakh (ex-showroom), and its detailed variant pricing to be revealed in January 2025. It aims to compete with upcoming models like the Tata Harrier EV and Safari EV. The BYD Atto 3 is already available in Dynamic, Premium, and Superior grades, priced between Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 25.99 lakh (ex-showroom), offering warranty options of 8 years or 1.6 lakh km on the battery.
