Mahindra-Volkswagen 50:50 Partnership: A Leap Towards Electrification

A strategic collaboration between Mahindra Auto and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (SAVWIPL) is reportedly in advanced stages. According to a new report by the Economic Times, SAVWIPL is negotiating a 50:50 partnership with Mahindra Auto. This potential joint venture aims to focus on electric SUVs for both Indian and global markets.

The discussions have progressed through multiple rounds of virtual and in-person meetings. Klaus Zellmer, Skoda Auto Global CEO, mentioned in Prague that the company was making significant progress in seeking an Indian partner. Both Mahindra and Volkswagen have not officially commented on this development yet.

Mahindra Volkswagen Group – 50:50 Partnership

SAVWIPL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group Germany, is reportedly looking to sell around 50% of its stake in its Indian business. The joint venture will prioritize the development and manufacturing of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and some Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles for the Indian market and exports.

The current portfolio of SAVWIPL, including mainstream offerings from Skoda and VW along with luxury brands, will not be part of this joint venture. An official announcement from Skoda and Mahindra might come by the end of this year.

Mahindra BE.05 Electric SUV

This partnership is not Mahindra's first collaboration with global brands. Previously, Mahindra has partnered with Renault, SsangYong (now KG Mobility), Ford, and recently Volkswagen. In their recent agreement, VW supplied electric vehicle powertrain components for Mahindra's INGLO platform used in the upcoming XUV.e and BE range of EVs.

For SAVWIPL, this partnership could help them gain a stronger foothold in India's car market, which is the third largest globally. Despite being operational in India for over two decades, SAVWIPL has struggled against competitive rivals. Partnering with Mahindra could help share costs, technology, platforms, and risks.

For Mahindra, this joint venture can significantly boost their electric vehicle portfolio. It aligns with their roadmap to achieve a 30% market share in India's SUV segment. The collaboration will also enhance Mahindra's presence in the electric vehicle market.

With these developments underway, both companies are poised to make significant strides in the automotive industry. This partnership could mark a new era for electric SUVs in India and beyond.
