Mahindra Thar Roxx 5-Door SUV New Details Leak Ahead Of Its Launch: Four Powertrains & More
Mahindra is set to launch the Thar Roxx shortly after its global debut on Independence Day. This highly anticipated vehicle will feature a new platform and advanced off-road capabilities, distinguishing it from the standard Thar 3-door model. The engines will be shared between the two models but with different power outputs.
Mahindra Thar Roxx: Platform & Suspension
The Thar Roxx will utilise an updated 4G platform, which is 40 kg lighter than its predecessor. This new platform was initially introduced with the Scorpio N in June 2022. The SUV will have an all-metal body shell, including a full metal hard top, made of high-strength steel, particularly in the pillar areas.
The suspension setup includes an independent front with double wishbones and a multilink rear with Watts linkage. Mahindra's 'Frequency Dependent Damping' technology will enhance ride quality, similar to features found in the Scorpio N.
Mahindra Thar Roxx: Diesel Engine Details
One of the engine options for the Thar Roxx will be Mahindra's mHawk Gen2 diesel unit. This 2.2-litre engine is expected to deliver 150hp and 350Nm for the entry-level model and 172hp and 370Nm for higher variants. Gearbox options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Mahindra Thar Roxx: Petrol Engine Details
The petrol variant of the Thar Roxx will feature a 2.0-litre turbo engine used in the Scorpio N and XUV700. It will offer two power outputs: likely 160hp and 330Nm for entry-level models, and 175hp and 380Nm for higher variants. The Scorpio N uses a more powerful version of this engine at 203hp.
Mahindra Thar Roxx: Off-Road Capabilities
The Thar Roxx comes equipped with Mahindra's 4Xplor off-road setup, featuring electronic brake locking differential (E-BLD) and electronic locking differential (ELD). It offers multiple terrain modes like Snow, Sand, and Mud but lacks a shift-on-the-fly 4WD setup, instead using a traditional lever for modes like 2H, 4H, and 4L.
A unique Crawl Smart Assist (CSA) feature allows setting a desired speed between 2.5kph and 30kph during off-road driving. Additionally, the 'Intelli Turn Assist' locks the rear inner wheel according to steering direction for tighter turns at speeds under 15 kph, activated only for up to 15 seconds after disengaging the electronic locking differential.
Mahindra Thar Roxx: Variants and Features
The Thar Roxx line-up will start with the W3 variant, likely available only in a 2WD configuration. Mid-spec variants are expected to offer a 4WD option to cater to a broader customer base. The SUV will be available as a five-seater across all variants.
Even entry-level versions are expected to be well-equipped with features like dual digital screens, LED lights, and additional creature comforts over the Thar 3-door model. Mid-spec variants may include a single-pane sunroof while higher trims could feature a panoramic setup.
Mahindra Thar Roxx: Launch Timeline
Bookings for the Thar Roxx are expected to commence around Independence Day when it debuts globally. The price announcement is scheduled for a few weeks later.
