Legal Battle: Mahindra's BE 6e Electric SUV Renamed BE 6 Amid Controversy
Mahindra has decided to rename its newly unveiled BE 6e electric SUV to BE 6, priced at Rs 18.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India). However, the company plans to legally challenge the rights to retain the BE 6e name. Mahindra argues that their trademark is distinct from IndiGo's '6E' and will contest this in court.
The BE 6e trademark falls under Class 12, differing from the category where InterGlobe Aviation Limited, which operates IndiGo Airlines, registered the '6E' name. Mahindra emphasises that their trademark is specifically for "BE 6e" and not just "6E". This distinction forms a core part of their legal argument.
Trademark Dispute With IndiGo
Mahindra finds InterGlobe's objection inconsistent with its past actions. In 2005, Tata Motors objected to IndiGo's name due to its Indigo sedan. Despite this history, InterGlobe now challenges Mahindra's use of BE 6e. Mahindra views this as contradictory and plans to address it legally.
Until the legal dispute concludes, Mahindra will market the electric SUV under the BE 6 nameplate. This vehicle marks Mahindra's entry into born-electric vehicles and competes with models like Tata Curvv EV and Hyundai Creta EV.
Launch Details & Specifications
The BE 6 electric SUV offers two battery options: a 59kWh pack with a range of 556km and a 79kWh pack providing up to 682km, based on MIDC standards. Deliveries are scheduled for late February or early March 2025, while pricing details will be disclosed in January.
Mahindra remains committed to defending its brand identity in court while proceeding with the launch of its new electric SUV. The outcome of this legal battle could set a precedent for future trademark disputes in India's automotive sector.
