Meet The Mahindra Armado: A Force To Behold
India's celebrated Republic Day Parade, a spectacular display of the nation’s cultural and defence prowess, has once again captured the imagination and pride of its citizens. The procession was led by a cavalcade of decorated floats representing the diversity of Indian states, with the might of military hardware following suit.
One vehicle, in particular, stood out with its impressive design and capabilities – marking the advancement in indigenous defence technology. The star of the parade in terms of military automotive technology was the Armado, an off-road beast designed and manufactured by the homegrown auto major Mahindra.

This robust machine especially designed for the Indian Army graced the occasion for the first time, showcasing the evolution of a vehicle that has been in use since 2012. Mahindra's Armado represents more than just automotive achievement; it embodies the technical strides and the self-reliance India is fostering in defence vehicle manufacturing.
Not only a juggernaut in appearance, but the Armado also boasts significant safety features. Its build provides bulletproof protection, making it adept at handling any unforeseen threat. Specifically tailored for military needs, the Mahindra Armado offers level 2 ballistic protection, which is a testament to its defensive capabilities.
The Armed Light Special Vehicle (ALSV) tag isn't just for show; the vehicle is strategically used across a spectrum of critical military expeditions including border security patrols, counter-terrorism activities, and rapid troop deployment.
Performance-wise, the Armado is equipped with a powerful engine capable of delivering 215bhp and a torque of 500Nm. Adding to its stellar capability is a 4-speed automatic gearbox that efficiently distributes power across all four wheels.
This mechanical prowess enables the Armado to sprint at a top speed of 120km/h and carry loads up to 1000kg. Even when faced with adversity, like a punctured tire, the vehicle remains unfazed and can continue at a steady clip of 50km/h.
This resilience can be largely attributed to its high-grade 318/80 R17 tires. To further its operational efficiency, it features an automatic cleaning system which guarantees performance even in the toughest weather conditions.
The Republic Day showcase presented two models of the Armado – the Light Special Vehicle (LSV) and the Vehicle Mounted Integrated Mobile Inspection System (VMIMS), each with distinctive functionalities catered to different aspects of defence operations.
With a keen focus on the indigenization of defence equipment, Mahindra's commitment to supplying the Indian military with such state-of-the-art vehicles underscores the strategic partnership between the Indian industry and defence forces.
However, in line with the vehicle's operational sensitivity, details regarding the onboard weapons systems and armaments are kept confidential. While the civilian sector may only speculate about the specifics, it is apparent that the Armado is a pivotal asset in the Indian Army’s arsenal.
Thoughts About Mahindra Armado
The Armado provided a glimpse into the country’s self-reliant future and the advanced capabilities of Indian automotive engineering, reiterating the Indian Army's preparedness and the burgeoning prowess of India's defence manufacturing.
