Mahindra Employs ABB's PixelPaint For Enhanced Custom Paint Options On New EV Line
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) will utilise ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint technology to offer customisation options for its new electric vehicles. This makes M&M the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to adopt PixelPaint for painting contrasting roofs and pillars.
ABB’s PixelPaint technology, which resembles an inkjet printer, will be operational in 2025 at M&M's new EV paint facility. Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, stated, "Our revolutionary PixelPaint technology can apply large areas of uniform colour as well as the tiniest details with complete accuracy, without delaying the production line or the need for manual intervention."
The PixelPaint system includes a paint head with over 1,000 tiny nozzles controlled individually. Mounted on an ABB robot like the IRB 5500 series, it works with ABB’s 3D vision system and RobotStudio® software to ensure precise application without overspray or misting. This eliminates the need for masking and repeat trips through the paint shop.
Demand for personalisation has surged recently, and ABB’s technologies are helping Mahindra establish itself in luxury segments. The deployment also involves 42 robots from the IRB 5500 family, making M&M the first OEM in India to use this technology for painting contrasting roofs and pillars.
Complex tasks such as interior painting and sealing are performed autonomously by ABB’s systems. This precision ensures paint is applied only where needed, saving time and materials by eliminating manual masking. Additionally, ABB’s RB1000i digitally-enabled paint atomisers improve transfer efficiency by 10 percent and reduce waste by over 30 percent.
PixelPaint's ability to apply finishes like contrasting roof and pillar treatments in a fully automated process enhances both quality and efficiency while reducing waste. This innovative approach aligns with growing consumer demand for personalised vehicle options.
