Tamil Nadu's Luxury Car Market Flourishes With A 46.2% Sales Increase

Luxury vehicles are gaining popularity among Indians, with Tamil Nadu seeing a notable rise in luxury car users. Data from the State's Commissionerate of Transport and Safety reveals a significant increase in the registration of cars priced over ₹30 lakhs.

In the financial year 2023-24, 8,475 units of luxury cars priced above ₹30 lakhs were sold. This marks a substantial increase from the 5,797 units sold in the previous financial year, reflecting a 46.2% growth. This trend indicates a continuous rise in luxury car sales in Tamil Nadu.

Luxury Car Sales Boom in Tamil Nadu

BMW leads the luxury car market in Tamil Nadu, selling 1,192 units in the financial year 2023-24. Mercedes Benz follows closely with 1,122 units sold. Jaguar Land Rover comes in third with 217 units sold. Porsche and Audi sold 84 and 77 units respectively.

Ultra-luxury brands also saw sales, albeit in smaller numbers. Rolls Royce sold 4 units, Ferrari and Aston Martin each sold 1 unit. Additionally, Maserati sold 3 cars and Bentley sold 7 cars in Tamil Nadu.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted luxury car sales in Tamil Nadu. In the financial year 2020-21, only 2,816 units were sold due to the pandemic's effects. However, sales rebounded to 3,954 units in the financial year 2021-22.

Before the pandemic, luxury car sales were also lower. In the financial year 2019-20, only 4,187 units were sold. The post-pandemic period has seen a resurgence in luxury car sales in Tamil Nadu.

Regional Sales Distribution

Chennai tops the list for luxury car registrations in Tamil Nadu with 1,668 units registered. Coimbatore follows with 510 units registered. Other cities like Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Trichy registered 110, 95, and 65 units respectively.

The rise in luxury car sales is not limited to just one brand or region. High-priced models from BMW, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, and Audi have all seen increased sales across Tamil Nadu.

"These statistics confirm that the growth rate of luxury car sales is faster than that of regular cars," said some senior auto industry experts. They expect this trend to continue in the coming years.

Despite a slight decline in Mercedes Benz sales last financial year, it remains a strong player in the market. The brand secured second place behind BMW in terms of sales volume.

The data underscores a growing preference for high-end vehicles among Tamil Nadu's affluent residents. This trend is expected to drive further growth in luxury car sales across the state.
